Excellent news batmom.
FWIW: The academy is pretty thorough in their evaluations for PRK. If they didn't think it would be successful, they wouldn't do it or offer it.
My son came into the academy wanting to be a pilot. He didn't have bad vision, but it wasn't good enough as it was to become pilot qualified. They allowed him to get PRK surgery and it went perfectly. A day or two of blindness, followed by using eye drops every day for a while. But by the time Pilot Qualification came around, no problem at all. He received his pilot slot and all was good. Luck would have it, he received a Grad School slot to get a PhD right out of the academy. He still got to hold his Pilot Slot, but he had a slight change of heart. He decided that he wanted to be "More Involved" in missions, so he applied to be allowed to "TRY OUT" for Special Tactics Officer. He passed the selection board and turned down his pilot slot. After finishing his PhD, he is now at Hurlbert Field Florida training to be an STO. So in the end, he got what he always wanted. (Although his mommy isn't too excited)
But so others know, PRK surgery is available to ANY cadet who qualifies and wants it after they commit and start their 3rd year. It's Not JUST for those wanting to be a pilot. Mike.,
