A little confused about the process?

I got my application in to USCGA about a week before the application deadline(Jan 15). I am still waiting to hear from DODMERB. Looking at another post it appeared that someone received a conditional appointment before taking the DODMERB.

So my question is; Is it possible to get an appointment without taking the DODMERB first? I feel like I am kinda screwed because I have not gotten my physical done yet and I have no idea how long it will take for them to contact me and schedule it.

I have seen conditionals happen with DoDMERB as the condition for USNA, so I suspect it's possible with CGA. I don't think you'll receive a full appointment however, only conditionals. And be patient, DoDMERB takes some time. CGA deadline for DoDMERB is March 15, so don't worry too much.

Yes, it is entirely possible to get a conditional appointment PRIOR to your DODMERB physical. The appointment would be "conditional" upon you being medically qualified by DODMERB. If you are deemed a viable candidate by Admissions, you will get an email with instructions on setting up an account at DODMERB/DODMETS. There is where you will get the names of providers to schedule your appointments with. (Medical, Vision and Hearing).

Ok great!!

Just what I wanted to hear. So a conditional appointment is essentially a LOA? If I pass medically then I WILL get in?

It's not a LOA, it's an appointment! A LOA is usually given very early in the Admissions process to highly qualified candidates and recruited athletes. The LOA guarantees an appointment providing all qualifications are met. Academically, Physically and Medically AND the candidate completes the application by the deadline. Many times candidates are given "conditional appointments" and that condition may be the candidate being deemed medically qualified. Often times there may be something that comes up in the medical that requires a remedial by DODMERB, or a waiver by the academy, and thus the Appointment is conditional on that all taking place.

If you do get a disqualification letter from DODMERB, don't feel defeated. Many many disqualifications can be waived by the Coast Guard Academy. And many people (including me) had waivers before we walked through the doors on R-Day at CGA.

How much earlier than April 1st do the conditional appointments usually come out? Could I find out in the middle of February for instance?

The only waiver that I might need is one for a heart murmur, but it has been tested as benign so I do not believe that I'll need one anyways.

A heart murmur is not a diagnosis, it is a symptom.

Whatever is causing the murmur could be a problem. Most asymptomatic murmurs are indeed harmless.
