**A thread for the Girls**

As far as leg shaving goes, one of my friends suggested waxing them instead before BCT. I've never done it before, but she said she was good to go for two to three weeks. That might help save some time in the beginning.

I'm going to Summer Seminar this year and I thought I'd try waxing before that, because I wasn't sure how much time there would be for shaving. I've heard that your first time it doesn't last as long, so if you have time, try to wax a couple times before you go.

Do the cadre care if we shave our legs? Is it regulation?

Our are we just talking about personal preference when it comes to leg shaving?

Don't stress shaving your legs. If you want to wax them or whatever, go ahead. keep in mind that if you want to shave them, it'll almost definitely be at night and not during designated hygiene time.

...but you should plan on sleeping as much as possible. Nobody really cares if you shave as much as usual and you will be absolutely exhausted, really try and limit the number of things you do after taps.

I *may* have run a razor over my legs once. I don't really remember. Personally, I recommend sleeping over shaving. You WILL look gross most of the time, and no one will be able to see your legs most of the time.

That said, do what you need to. If you're OK on sleep and really feel like it would help you not go insane, then go for it. Just don't plan on having time in the shower.

Cadre won't notice or care one way or the other.

When you say designated hygiene time does that mean we have specific shower times or is that just at night when it is time to write letters/free time?

That means that at least once a day (usually in the evening) you will get in bathrobes and line up in the hall. 4 at a time (there are 4 showers in each bathroom) you'll go in and typically have, what, 3 minutes in the bathroom? They're not very long showers.

After Taps is your only real "free" time, since that is the only time you're away from cadre. I'd suggest getting ready for morning (make bed, etc), then sleeping.

Boots

For the "Boot Size" part on the portal, should we do our tennis shoe size? I'm worried they will be read as men's sizes and I will end up with a size 8 in men's.

You will try on your boots when they're issued. Take the time to make sure they fit. Best wishes. :thumb:

Somewhere I heard that you aren't allowed to wear front bangs in the military. Is that true? What are the rules for bangs?

curly hair

My DD has very curly hair - think ringlets. When she pulls her hair into a bun, her doesn't lay perfectly flat against her head. Her hair looks wavy. Will this be a problem?

I'm not sure if your daughter's hair as of now would be a problem at USAFA but at USCGA, all girls are required to use hair gel (in copious amounts unfortunately  ) which seemed to do the job for my fellow swabs with curly hair. So, maybe a potential solution? I would run some through my hair with my hands and then brush it through before I put my hair up. It sounds like it would take a lot of time but it didn't at all, maybe 30-40 seconds max.

First thing to go in the trash at the end of Swab Summer: Hair Gel

Ok, we'll give that a try. She's already expecting to bring a large bottle of conditioner so that she can at least run her fingers through her hair after washing it. Seriously - she keeps the conditioner people in business.

What is an acceptable run time for BCT? My daughter is recovering from an injury and is concerned about her speed and endurance.

My DD will run with her. She's been working on getting back her endurance, too. There's a thread on the 2018 facebook page where several appointees are giving each other pointers and encouragement, specifically about running. If your DD hasn't been there yet, I highly recommend it. I'm impressed with how much "teamwork" is already being displayed.

Thanks USAFA83GradWife. Another question...On the packing list it says to bring shampoo and body soap. What about face soap, hair gel and hairspray? I have seen it mentioned several times on this thread that gel really helps keep your hair in place but could not find if you can bring it with you or have to purchase it at the C store.

As I understand it, they don't have a lot of time for showers, but they can wash their hair and face in their rooms.

DD will bring conditioner and gel (and possibly hair spray.) Worst case, they take them away until after BCT. There's absolutely no way DD will have enough time to detangle her curly hair in the shower, so she'll have to put conditioner in her hair during the shower & rinse it in her room. I can't imagine they'll take away gel, either. Again, with DD's curly hair, gel is a necessity.

What's you DD's squadron?

You can bring all the products you need to keep your hair together. You can also bring face soap but there's so little time to shower that there is usually no time for separate products for face though you can certainly wash in the sink. I think my daughter told me she started with her hair (2 in 1 shampoo conditioner ) and just washed her way down as she rinsed her hair. Pretty much all she had time for. Good luck to your girls!

USAFA 2017 girl here,

As for shaving and showers, there is barely any time for that. You'll be tired, worn down, and will be uptight most of the time during BCT. What would best as for shampoo and conditioner, get a two in one because you'll probably only have a max of 3 minutes to shower (if your cadre is nice enough). Shaving though, it depends on the person. I shaved after they put us to bed, not every day though cause all I wanted to do was pass out. Most of my squad mates didn't really care so they didn't do much.

Also, hair gel would be very helpful since you will get called out on almost anything, so I would advise buying some and putting it on at night during bct so your hair stays firm in the morning...

Good luck!

I know I didn't go to USAFA but I highly recommend against doing this. You hair is going to need time to dry at night and recover from the stress of having it up all the time. Trust me, my hair is a lot thinner than it used to be after four years of it constantly being up. If you don't take care of your hair during BCT/Swab Summer/Plebe Summer/etc., you run the risk of growing mold, and it does happen. Putting gel in your hair and then leaving it in overnight will only exacerbate a potential negative situation. I don't know the schedule at USAFA but head and water breaks (aka bathroom breaks) were given to swabs every morning before PT. That was when we would throw the gel in our hair. That being said, we were given anywhere between 2-3 minutes for these breaks but you learn to move fast and you discover that you can get a lot done in 2 or 3 minutes.

I do agree with hiiperson11 on everything else though, no one is going to be looking at your legs and 2 in 1 shampoo is one of the greatest inventions for anyone going through that first summer at any Academy. :thumb:

I have very thick, bi-racial hair and I never had a problem with mold. My advice would be to put whatever you plan to use, I used conditioner and gel, in your hair at night, and then sleep with it down, this allows it to relax and dry, but also controls frizz and flyaways. You quickly become accustomed to putting it up in a fraction of seconds and won't even think about it! Plus it's very dry in CO, helping to cut down on the mold problem
