Look into renting a house. That is what we did for Iday and Plebe Parents Weekend it is totally worth it. Most houses are within walking distance of the academy. The way I understand I-day, is that once you all take your oath, you visit with family for 45 minutes and are on your way by 7:15. Then you are not seen again until PPW.

The earliest I would suggest parents leaving is I-Day +1. They need to stay for all the I-Day events. They especially don't want to miss the oath, their last hug until PPW, and the march into Bancroft. I-Day will end for them at around 20:00 and will be exhausting. Many parents will meet up at local pubs and visit with each other after leaving the Yard on I-Day. Rest that night, and travel the next day. That's what we did and it worked out well.

A few parents stuck around to watch PEP the next morning. Also, Fourth of July events in the DC area and fireworks over the Severn.

So, if my parents just want to stay for I-day, they will be able to leave on July 1st and not miss anything?

That is how I understand everything I have researched. Everything comes to an end when you March into Bancroft at 7:15 pm on the 30th.

While schedules can change from one year to the next, in the past, activities for parents ended on I-day once the plebes return to Bancroft hall. Your future travel plans will also be influenced by whether you are driving or flying and/or how far you have to travel.

What is PEP, and do some parents still stay for it?

Physical exercise program. I think that's it. It's the early morning exercise for the plebes.

That is right. Have your family time before I Day, see your Mid off, watch the ceremony at day's end, and get a good night's sleep to recover from the emotional day.

I do not agree with renting a house for I Day or PPW. It could be convenient, but the prices are exorbitant, and most are NOT within walking distance.

Annapolis is notoriously expensive during academy events such as I Day, Parent weekend, game days, and graduation. The hotels jack up the prices and the people that rent out homes are trying to get windfall profits.

Don't worry if you stay in a hotel, you will be in the majority. Most people don't have $3000 to $5000 for housing. A good thing to do for I Day is have a mini vacation that ends a day or two prior to I Day in Annapolis. That gives you bonding time and reduces the price gouging.

The wealthy will argue, but alas, we are not among them.

They stay for it because they love their little pumpkin more than anything! They miss them so much already, that they feel better just being in the same zip code. The odds are slim that you will be able to recognize your skin head. (The girls are more recognizable because for 1, they're girls, and 2, the hair regs have been lessened for them to attract more females and maybe keep the boys happier too.) They all look so similar, they're dressed alike, and there probably won't be company identifiers.

If this is your first to leave the nest, you will want all the sightings you can get. I wouldn't make signs, or scream their name though... that attracts attention. Not a good thing on their second day.

thanks, he's our youngest so no. Now it's more of an empty nest staring us in the face. Not looking forward to that.

I do agree that getting a house can be expensive. We are far from wealthy and we found it cheaper than getting a hotel. Plus I save money by not eating out for every meal. Both that I found are within walking distance. We are sharing the house with other family members which made it even cheaper. The drive into Annapolis during busy weekends can be very frustrating which is one reason we chose to rent a house.

+1 Maplerock, spend time with your plebe-to-be before I Day. My DS's report time was 6am, we didn't see him until after the oath ceremony and then BOOM! It's over! We arrived 3 days early and toured the Yard, DTA and the surrounding area at a leisure pace. Also, don't forget the Mid Store and all the USNA and c/o 2020 SWAG you can buy. I recall we had access to the Mid Store the day before I Day.
