How important are grades? And is the writing portion required for the SAT/ACT. What is a good average to get on my scores

Although the formula for the USNA "whole candidate score" is a well-kept secret, academics are supposed to be more than half of the total. That includes GPA/class rank and SAT/ACT scores. Usually a candidate needs a score of ~600 on each section of the SAT to even get a candidate number. Look through the USNA web site. Each year they post information about the class profile of the incoming Plebes. That profile shows overall grades/class ranks, test score ranges, ECAs, and so forth.

To get a candidate number from USNA, you must have submitted either an application to attend NASS, OR a USNA Preliminary Application, and USNA must decide that you will be a viable candidate. Test scores of a minimum of 600 per section are usually needed for someone to be a viable candidate and get a number.

NASS is only open to current juniors in HS, but anyone who is a HS junior or older can fill out a preliminary application. The preliminary application is now open for the Class of 2015 that would enter USNA in the summer of 2011. Here is the link:

when should i hear back from nass if i got accepted or not and when do i get a candidate number.

over 25% of the class scored bellow 1200 on the SAT two part, so no you can get a candidate number without a 600. They also don't want bookworms, they want future officers, while they want their officers to be smart, there are other things that are wanted as well.

my scores are allright andimproing but my leadership is strong and deep. I am just starting the process. ANy tips would be helpful. Is a 1200 on the SAT good, because i got a 1410

I have a 1340 and was accepted to the class of 2014. So I would say a 1410 is very good.

These posts might shed some light on the subject.

I'll bet that each year, the process of selecting people for appointments is different.

It seems like it might be like picking teams for a pick-up football game on any Saturday down at the park.

It depends on who shows up and with what equipment ,,, the guy who brings the balls and bats and extra gloves ,,, well, he always gets picked first. :)

I applied to nass but havent heard back i have strong leadership. YEs my act wasnt as good it was a 25 but i am retaking both my gpa is a 3.6. Thanks for all the help. ANy other tips are great

If you scored a 1410 out of 1600, then that's already pretty great but it couldn't hurt to retake it. What were your scores for math + CR?

They're making NASS decisions all the way up until the third week of April I believe, but there are always exceptions. Just be patient!

I want to remind everyone that CLASS RANK is VERY IMPORTANT. I know people fixate on SAT/ACT score but where you rank in your class is probably the most important criterion.

Also very important are the grades you earn in your math and science classes.

I'm not able to get into details right now (for privacy reasons), but trust me that SATs are not the be all and end all.

Thank you i am working on all of those and i just got my nomination to boys state
