Academy and Officer swords

That picture is terrific Pima, it's inspiring me

Well than get ready for your spouse to relegate it into a room where she never enters:wink: I know so many spouses that have their DHs Wong hanging in a room on a wall that unless she is actually in it she will never see it. Sometimes they never ever get unpacked...this occurs as you are married longer and don't need to hang it to cover wall space...Once she has enough to cover the walls, it is gone. All of us that have the Yukon proudly hang them in prominent places..it is actually quite beautiful flying over the Alaskan mtns...NOTHING IS BEING BLOWN UP, it is just about the beauty of the jet.

Hahaha no that will never happen :thumb:. She will have to deal with it being "displayed appropriately" in the bedroom perhaps in front of the bed. Haha, I remember hearing that "as long as the kitchen is big, nothing else matters."

"RIIIIIGHT".....and you have what proof of this???//
Young'ens......So much to learn yet!

HERE's how it really works:

She says: YOU dragged me to this place, your a** will be deployed and leave me home with the kids...I WANT THIS HOUSE...

You than smile, give her a kiss and say YES DEAR, where do I sign!

You will do that if you want to ever practice at trying to have children...otherwise hang the D & D right over her dresser because it will be the best birth control ever created:shake:

D & D's get relegated to a site where she never has to see it very quickly...such as, your office on a wall that is not viewable from an entry way! The very smart husbands will come home at every base and say...I just saw the greatest print, she will listen to the description and eventually agree on one of them. Don't include her in the decision and you will never hear the end of it...That thing has to be hung where I never see it is the typical comment while you are unpacking boxes. You will go from room to room saying what about here, until you have done enough moves to realize it is going on a wall that she never has to see except for when she is cleaning your office.

Yep that is how I ended up in our present house. She said this is where I want to live.....It is one stop light away from her job....one stop light away from the college she is attending to get her MBA.....it is 20 Minutes away from her Mom's house.........and I said yes dear....I am more than happy to accommodate!

Why you ask……well she followed me all over God’s green earth for 23 of my 28 years on the Corps…..and sucked it up during many months of deployments to those wonderful and exotic places Uncle Sam sent me to……Bottom line, she deserved to have a say on our retirement home….

Now that doesn’t mean she did not think about me. I really wanted to retire “down South” around Hilton Head Island area……she took that into account. She knew how much we could afford for a mortgage……our primary house cost XXX amount…..that left us with XXX amount to buy that Condo on Hilton Head! See she took care of me too!

Yeah you're both right. I was talking to her a little while ago about something similar to this, and I'm guessing that I will just have to salute and move on. lol.

My sword (and my entire I Love ME wall, for that matter) is currently stored in my attic (long story), but the sword and mounting plaque have always had an honored place when I had the ability to give them one. Normally, it went over my fireplace, with the rest of the stuff in the den/office.

As for my sword, purchased for me by my parents, and given to me by my father after my graduation ceremony. He had tears in his eyes when he presented it to me saying, "I know that over the years you often had doubts as to whether you would ever earn this, but I never did."

Sniff..... sorry, something in my eye....

I bought 2 (max allowable for USAFA Class of 81). Kept one for my "I love me" wall/room. Gave the other to my parents when I graduated. I guess I have an "I love me" wall in their house, too. Been almost 30 years and that plaque and saber is still on their parlor wall.

Sword costs

OK ... looking ahead to DS graduating from USNA in 2013 ... and think a sword would be a terrific grad gift. The question, though, is about the sword itself ... are there different kinds/styles? What is the cost ... someone told us to buy/order ahead, get it engraved and present to him on grad day ... input/experience please!

Your DS isn't issued a sword when he becomes a firstie for drill? That's the case here at CGA. I would check to see if he is going to get issued one beforehand.

Maybe call the Midshipman store at USNA and ask them?

Yes, Navy Officer swords need to be sized. Next year or this summer if your son drills with a sword as a firstie he will know what size he is. They are issued them for drill, but must be returned. If not, he can go to the Mid store and they will size him. They sell them at the Midshipmen store and some other places. In the past, alot of information had been mailed home to parents to purchase things like swords, rank insignia boxes, and diploma frames for graduation gifts. I am sure they still do the same. Not sure on price now, but if I remember right they were about $400 for a Navy sword and about $800 for the Marine Officer Mameluke. The belts and all the other accessories to swords can also add up to another $100-$200. I think if you google Navy Officer Sword you might be able to find a valid vendor, but I would definitely do my homework before purchasing online to ensure it is a reputable company. Swords are a common gift for grads. My parents purchased mine as it was mandatory to have as a Marine. It was not mandatory on the Navy side, but with all the weddings and other things your son will have after graduation they do come in handy.

What I've always wanted to find, and have come close a few times, is a Revenue Cutter Service officer sword.... now that would be something!

We purchased the sword outfit for our Lt. for Christmas. We used Marlow-White (http://www.marlowwhite.com/) for the sword ($100.00 less expensive than the Marine Shop and same manufacturer) and picked up the Sam Browne, Sword Belt, Frog, etc at the Marine Shop. Marlow White does the swords for all of the services and they are very heplful and responsive. At some point during TBS, they will have a sword inspection and his will be checked for sizing and MARCORSYS number stamped into the back edge of the blade.

MJOmom, You can order swords from Marlow-White swords on-line once you know the sword length that's needed. You can also buy them on-line through Johnson's, or you can buy through the Mid Store (that's on my agenda this coming Friday!). There are two grades of swords, regular and "premium." They are different in blade thickness (and cost), but both are official, so it's a matter of your new Ensign's choice. You can buy the sword alone, or you can get a package that includes sword, belt, sword knot, etc. If you do buy the package, you will need to know the belt size as well as sword length.

If your Mid ends up going USMC, I was told by the Mid Store people that their Mameluke swords are issued items.

USMC sword/sabre is "issued" but charged to their account. The officer will pay for it.:thumb: Movers at end of TBS thought it was a rifle in the cover and opened it up for the serial number for interstate transport. Response was "you own a sword?":shake: Like every woman doesn't have one in their household goods.

Trust me, the USMC Mameluke is paid for by the new officer or given as a gift. The Marine Shop and on base both have programs that allow new officers to buy all those great Marine uniforms and pay for them over time. They are not cheap by any means! And for those going Marine Corps, unless a family member hands one down, do not get them inscribed until after TBS. For some silly reason that is a big deal at TBS as they mocked everyone who did. Just one of those weird TBS quirks.

If they go USMC it is a whole lot of $$$ for new uniforms. :yllol:

Sorry, I should have been clear that all items "issued" to Mids come out of their pay.

Comment from my Mid after service selection, "Submariners get a big bonus, aviators and SWOs break even, and Marines pay a $5000 uniform fee."
