If the Academy wants to give me an appointment will I have "LOA" located anywhere on my online application?

A LOA is different from an appointment. A LOA is when you have your application in and full (besides nom), and then they think you are highly qualified, and basically say, “Get a nomination, and you get an appointment with it”. Thats the short and sweet version, somebody who knows more can elaborate. So it means the ACADEMY is fine with giving you an appointment, not necessarily whomever you are applying for a nomination though.

If you received a letter from the Academy that starts off "Congratulations! The Academy Board has approved you for admission to the United States Air Force Academy Class of 2015. You are virtually assured of an appointment upon receipt of a nomination." Then your online app should have Letter of Assurance in the Appointment space.

Does that mean the academy is waiting to send me one until all the other more competitive candidates have received one?

No, IF you got that letter saying you have a LOA, then they are waiting for a nomination, regardless of other people. IF you got a LOA (I don’t know if you have it) then you are only competing against people in your district, or state.

Actually; if you get an LOA, you're not competing with anyone. You simply need a nomination. Doesn't matter if you're #10 on the list or #1 on the list. You just need a nomination.

Now; getting an LOA is rare. 90+% of all appointees, do NOT GET LOA's. It's actually an area that most people are told not to even think about. Just finish your application 100%; work hard at getting a nomination(s); and hope for the best. An LOA is for applicants the academy believes to be the best of the best of the best. It's usually the top-10% of applicants. Best of luck to you. Mike....

I have an interesting story to add on to this:

Currently, I have my nomination but no LOA. One of my friends (who I met at the Summer Seminar) has an LOA but no nomination yet.

But, as stated before, if nothing changes, I can be offered an appointment and he can't. However, I believe most people who get LOA's often get nominations as well.
