Academy Questions

Well thats good to know! Some of these guys on here (not sure if they are grads or not..if they are KP grads it is pretty disappointing the negative info they are giving!)

From what some KP alumni state on this forum, it seems as if wanting to get an active duty commission upon graduation from KP is frowned upon...Can someone please elaborate on my statement, because as a hopeful candidate for USMMA class of 2016, as well as an aspiring military aviator, my impressions of KP military grads are becoming slightly diluted with negativity from former KP grads. Thanks! Go Mariners!!
I can tell you that as an alumni I do share a certain amount of disappointment with my alma mater in that the school itself has taken on a greater emphasis of the active duty options at the expense of its maritime heritage and mission. I don't know if it started in the early 90s or just accelerated then with the appointment of RADM Matteson as the superintendent. He was the first in a recurring string of retired Flag and General officers, none of whom were alumni. It will remain to be seen what the current occupant of Quarters A does in that vein.

In these forums, as long as you don't come in here with the attitude that you guess you could grace KP with your presence along the way to active duty and that you suppose you could lower yourself to that level but you really would rather go to "real" academy like USNA/USMA/USAGA/USCGA then you will be received just fine. If you do apply yourself and complete the first step of your journey and walk through Vickery gate, you will have no issues on campus. Many of my best friends from school went active duty and went to KP with that intention. Just respect the school, respect its heritage and respect those who went before you.

Well said. My DS could not be more proud of his Alma Mater. In fact, he could not wait to tell me that the USNA graduate in his company had a total of six sea days and four of them were spent on shore leave in New York.
