Acceptances for Summer Seminar Out

CVW and NASS are two totally different animals. Being offered one won't preclude the other.

CVW is like a campus visit. NASS is an orientation/recruitment program.

@USNA21hopeful -stay hopeful, my friend. You're still in the running until you're told you're not.
How did you find out that information? Have you been to a CVW? From what I understand the candidate shadows for 2 days to get a feel for the program. It's a real life experience. There is no fee paid other than getting your DS or DD there. Just curious as to the difference of each program. Nobody has been able to say for certain. Thanks for your help! Would love a comparison from someone who's been to both!

My DS went to CVW in Oct. He is a Junior. Great opportunity. My wife and I went too and attended the programs for the parents. CVW is geared towards the student and parents. It allows you to see the USNA while in session. CVW is a more realistic assessment. NASS is geared only towards the student. NASS is during the summer and most of the entire student body is out. My DS is awaiting his NASS decision just like USNA21hopeful and others.

Awesome! Thanks for the input! My DS is also a junior. It can be so consuming at times! My DS first attended STEM 2 years ago and loved it. He just received a CVW but no NASS yet. We're all going in March and looking forward to it.

I've not been to NASS, but went to CVW in Jan. We signed in, dropped off our bags according to the group assigned. They say to eat dinner first, but there were nice appetizers & drinks available. We then met in an auditorium (with parents) and a couple different admissions officers spoke to us and they showed a pretty long video showcasing the Naval Academy, Plebe summer, etc. We then met with our plebes and reported to Bancroft Hall. I pretty much shadowed my plebe and a couple others. My Plebe was a varsity athlete, so the "drags" are not allowed to go to their practices- so during that time I paired with an alternate plebe. I ate meals with them in the dining hall, went to classes & had lots of time to "pick their brain" about whatever. I slept in a cot in my plebe's dorm. It was a really great experience. I can imagine some kids may decide after that- "this is not for me". I loved it. There was a separate program for the parents (optional) and they had a couple informative Q&A sessions with midshipmen, session with one of the professors & a nice tour. Parents aren't required to attend, but my parents said it was great info. BRING YOUR PLEBE A TREAT!

DD did CVW January 2015 and NASS 2015. CVW is indeed free except for transportation costs. Potential candidate is called a "drag" and 4/C is assigned as "dragger". In DD's case, dragger and her roommate were both D1 athletes and did not have a normal schedule (one up super early for practice; the other up super late for practice). They were both nice enough, but DD did not get good flavor for what life would be for a regular plebe. She was able to attend a couple of classes, but didn't take part or witness any formations or fitness routines. This experience probably greatly depends on "dragger" assignment. It was crazy cold and, overall, the dreary days of winter seemed to make the mids less-than-enthused about life at the academy.

For DD, NASS was much better experience because it gave a better feel for academy life. While there's not much academics at NASS, you do attend seminar-style classes in your areas of interest, and you get a bit of an idea of what it's like to be part of a company.

USNA21Hopeful, DS has been to NASS last year and was told that it does have an impact on your packet! His AC also mentioned to him that he obtained a high rating from his CO during NASS and that was looking good on his record! DS has been contacted by 8 of his friends that went with him to NASS and they have had appointments to the Big Show or NAPS or Foundation! If you can go, it would be hove you to try. IMHO.

GO NAVY!

now i really hope i get the opportunity to go!!!!!!!

Hang in there! If you do get selected for NASS, pack lightly and start practicing NOW to beat every activity on the CFA! You can repeat the CFA, but better to max it the first time at NASS!

GOODS LUCK AND GO NAVY!

One thing to remember while everyone posts about their NASS acceptances....
1. Other than a handful of NASSers, your performance there will have practically no affect on your application.
2. Many more NASS applicants will not be admitted than those accepted.
3. Only about 1/3 of each entering class attended NASS...that means there is another 1/3 that didn't (if you take out post-H.S. appointees).

So if you are accepted...don't go walking on cloud nine....and if you aren't accepted...that isn't an indication of your competitiveness.

My DD received email invite to USAFA summer seminar. She is waiting to hear from USNA and USMA and has just started the AIM app as well. She has to let AF know by Feb 28. We are limited on what she can attend if selected ($$). Her first choice of summer would be NASS but she doesnt want to miss the AF opportunity if she is not selected for NASS. She just received recent ACT scores which are higher than on her NASS app. Do you think she should contact USNA with new scores? Or is that not really necessary for NASS. Hoping to hear soon from NASS and SLE.. she applied for those the day the apps opened.

i recently received my act scores and I emailed admissions so they could update my scores. Best of luck to you and your daughter!

Accepted! Is anyone else going to SLE first? I am concerned about my luggage/laundry situation since the two sessions are back to back and I am from California...
Don't pack much. You won't need it. My son attended session 1 last year---- he did not wear any civilian clothes. He wore what they gave him. They give you everything you need to wear. You need your own bathing suit, shoes and sock and sleep wear. Everything he packed he came home with clean. They even gave him a laundry bag.

Hey Future Class of 2021,

NASS Acceptances are out. I received my email of acceptance just now.

Good luck to you all!

My son was accepted to the USAF SS- he hasn't heard from USNA or USMA, what are the chances he will get in?

The bottomline is no one really knows your son's chances. Each SA has its own criteria. Each application emphasized different things. The AFA SS had two essays. SLE had none. NASS and AFA SS wanted you to write out your extracurriculars while SLE had check blocks.

However, statistically speaking, the AFA SS is arguably the most competitive program of the three because they accept less than 500 attendees. USMA SLE takes 1000, and NASS takes 2550.

Again, even knowing the numbers, it is hard to tell because these summer programs are recruiting tools. So let's say you're from the Annapolis area, you have a better chance at the AFA SS or SLE because you already know about the USNA, so there's no reason to introduce you to the USNA. I heard that if you're from Colorado, it's almost impossible to get into the AFA SS.

My DS is in the same situation as your DS. He got into AFA SS, and waiting to hear from SLE, NASS and AIM. He is happy he made one so far. If he doesn't get into any others, he will go to the sport camps at USMA and USNA as a backup.

Thank-you for the reply. My son and I are anxiously awaiting ( as are all of you). Your theory may be correct about location and acceptance rates because we are from New Hampshire. Good luck to everyone reading this~

Also don't forget an old, old, old pair of tennis shoes for Sea Trials! They will definitely be thrown away after sloshing through the river mud!

GO NAVY!
