Accepted to Summer Seminar!

My goal to attend all three seminars.....

My son (s0cc3rizlife92) is another one hoping to do all three seminars.

I think it's great that he can go to all 3 summer seminars. My only comment was if there was a conflict and you had to choose. But if you can go to all 3; then by all means do it.

I would highly recommend that all prospective candidates for a service academy attend at least one of the three summer seminars offered.

For the record, there are four (4) summer academy programs, not three (3).

Summer Leaders Seminar (SLS) - USMA
Naval Academy Summer Seminar (NASS) - USNA
Air Force Academy Summer Seminar (SS) - USAFA
Academy Introductory Mission (AIM) - USCGA

Luigi - 4 not 3

Luigi,

Ok, I stand corrected but I don't know anyone who attended that seminar so I can't really say. All I know is that I have appointments to USAFA and USNA, waiting on Harvard even though I probably will go to Air Force unless I get a sweet deal.

Anyways,

Luigi, always there to remind us of the little Academies. :thumb:
^^ :yllol: Never a dull moment... Little sisters and all!

I have heard though that the USCGA Summer Seminar is rather intense... Pretty selective also, I do wish I had the chance to attend it.

Back to USAFA SS, I was completely drained after! In it's own way, SS was more tiring than Basic. That was probably because we were doing classes along with the military training, while Basic is just military training. You find the ways to get some rest during Basic. It may seem imposible, but it's do-able! For SS you will be so pumped up on adrenaline that you don't even notice until you get to the airport at the end and can actually rest! I slept the whole time at the airport, whole plane ride, whole car ride home (2 hrs.) and then took another 2 hr. nap once home. During Basic for Doolie Day Out, I took a 3 hr. nap and called it good. it's a different kind of tired. More emotional, your body gets used to the physical beatings!

Yes, Basic is very tiring. I've actually had a number of cadets actually tell me that they never realized that they could SLEEP sitting or standing with their EYES OPEN. They said; "You really can do it". You'll be surprised what happens when the "Spirit is willing but the body says "Up Yours"". LOL!!! Later... mike....

Sleep while sitting and eyes open.... man that skill could have been useful these last four years :thumb:

Thanks for the link to the AF SS summary. After watching that, now I'm actually reconsidering having him do all 3. Especially since AF would be last and I hate to have him completely burned out before he even gets to that point! Guess we'll be having a long talk tonight!

We did read/hear good things about the Coast Guard SS, but it's in mid-July, which is the height of his travel soccer season, and since he really doesn't have any interest in the CG, we didn't look any further into it.

And I fully understand the "getting used to lack of sleep" thing. When I was in Saudi Arabia for the first Gulf War, I think I had even less sleep than during Beast, but over a longer period of time. I remember commenting to someone that before I was out there that I'd used to think that it was necessary to sleep EVERY night!

To DadandGrad

You are very welcome
Going to Colorado from Seattle to Salt Lake then to Colorado Springs was my first flight on my own and I was going to a place with no real idea on how it was going to play out and I knew no one. Then there was the airport and the hook up with the academy officials and the 45 minute bus ride to the academy. I must admit though I really was not sure what I was getting myself into but once I got there I had a "blast", met lots of cool kids from all over and it left a very positive impression on me. I would say that the AF SS is the best but some might not agree with me. Just my personal opinion and I based that off conversations with friends who went to the other ones and other sources. So if you have to choose one, go with the one that makes sense with your son’s schedule because I can relate.

Sincerely,

MKF2013
USAFA(1st)\USNA(2nd)\Harvard(??)

I'm in this exact same situation! School gets out on 5th and we have finals that week so i will take them early so i can go to the SLS at West Pont. Then I will be going the AFA for their last session. Looks like your son and I will be on the same schedule.

Oh, thats really good to know, that its worthwhile to go to more than one SLS. Thanks.

I just got in too, I'm going to Session C. I sent my application in on December 28th, never heard anything for a long time, but then I got a phone call from my LO on Monday, and the acceptance letter on Friday, so i guess she liked me. How good are your chances of getting into the Academy if you get into the SS?

Ohh, and what all does this summer seminar entale?

That's awesome, congrats! I'm going to be at the 3rd session also, I look forward to meeting everyone on here. There is another thread for SS participants, make sure to add your name to the list so we can see who all is going when. 3rd session is dominating so far =]

You applied and got accepted to summer seminar; but you aren't sure what it is? Well I do want to congratulate you for having the initiative to ask. You are already ahead of many who are willing to stay ignorant. Good for you.

In a nut-shell; summer seminar is an opportunity for you to go to the academy for a week and experience a small taste of life at the air force academy. You'll get to see classrooms, dorms, facilities, athletics, cadets, etc... You'll spend a day being treated just like a new cadet. You'll be running, exercises, having fun with sports, etc... Basically, it's a chance for you to get a taste of what 4 years will be like. You'll have the opportunity to ask questions and get answers. The objective is for you to realize that you do or don't want to live that lifestyle for the next 9 years. (4 in school and 5 as a military officer). best of luck to you. Mike.....
