Accepting AFROTC scholarship question

Two questions here:

1. I've been awarded a four year type 7 scholarship and would like to attend the College of Charleston. This college however only has a two year scholarship program (held at Charleston Southern). And my scholarship will not be activated until my junior year, so freshman and sophomore year will be paid from pocket. So my question is, can I attend the College of Charleston and keep my AFROTC scholarship, then activate it my junior year? I need to know because I would rather not give up the scholarship now and then have to apply again during college and risk not getting it.

2. On my acceptence letter from AFROTC, it states "Please inform us of your decision by returning the attatched indorsement via email no later than 02 April 2012." Does this mean I can scan and email it on April 2nd? I would like to ask my first question to my scholarship technician and somebody at the detachment from Charleston Southern, but they are only open on Monday-Friday. And April 2nd is a Monday.

Kind of confusing to understand so please tell me if I need to elaborate a bit more. It's just coming down to crunch time and I'm still not 100% sure on what I am going to be doing.

Thanks,

Winner,

You had another thread about this a week ago http://www.serviceacademyforums.com/showthread.php?t=24970

I am not sure why you didn't follow the advice given last week when posters stated to contact them ASAP. Not trying to be prickly, just asking why you didn't contact them.

The wording is clear, you can scan and email it April 2nd. The wording that is unclear is it is by close of business day, or midnight.

The only problem I see is that you will be converting the 7 to a 3 yr 2, but because of the college only offering 2 yrs., where does that 1 yr go? Can you take it to your original college for the missing yr?

I also still have that fear of WHAT IF?

What if Charleston doesn't take you? Do you have an acceptance from Charleston in hand? Probably not, most likely you will have to apply as a sophomore for admittance. College is not like HS. You can't assume anything when it comes to grades!
What is the motivation for your C100/200 college to support you for EA aka FT? You are leaving them, why should they support you over the cadet staying? Theoretically it would be because you are a stronger candidate, but theoretically and reality sometimes never meet.
If not selected, the fat lady sang, and all this planning equated into nothing. The scholarship can be pulled.

I wish you the best, hope it all works out.

I contacted them last week and asked if I would be able to transfer and they said yes it is possible. They also said however that the majority of people in the program join AFROTC their junior year in college.

It wasn't until recently, today actually, that my family and I were able to open up to the idea of attending the CofC for all four years while still being able to not break the bank.

I've already been accepted to Charleston so that is not a problem. My real problem would be attending Charleston my freshman and sophomore year and not receiving an AFROTC scholarship. Which is why I would rather keep my scholarship if possible so I don't have to reapply.

I'll call the Detachment and my technician on Monday to clear everything up.

Thanks,

You should scan and email your acceptance right away. They'll then send you this big packet where you have to confirm your acceptance or decline the offer by May 31. It'll just give you more time to think, you don't want to risk sending it at the last minute, it could create alot of unnecessary problems. As for the other question, all I can say is good luck and God bless, hope it all works out for you.

If you convert the 7 into a 3 yr 2, than your real issue is freshman yr., because soph-sr yrs will be 18K, plus stipend and book allowance. That means as a soph. you would get 900 a yr in books, and 350 in a non-taxable paycheck.
~~~ Now if that means you use it to pay towards college, so be it, but it will help.
Have you done FAFSA yet?
I believe, will not swear by it, but I thought you automatically will qualify for a $5500 loan regardless of the amt your folks earn. You may also qualify for grants.
Have you looked into seeing if Charleston gives reduce rates for ROTC cadets?
Sometimes they will give IS tuition rate, sometimes they give reduced room and boarding
Have you asked if they give ROTC students scholarships?
Some schools like VT actually have scholarships up to 5K for ROTC students in certain majors.
There are financial issues that are unique to each and every school. I would contact the admissions office to determine if there are unique ROTC opportunities from a fiscal perspective.
I would also sign it, but do it as a conversion from 7 to 2, because you would never be a 7 since your residency is Florida.
The big difference between 7 and 2 is that 2 allows you to pay the difference if it is over 18K a yr, 7 does not offer that option.
Additionally, most colleges offer a monthly payment plan. In other words, if it costs 34.5K to go as a freshman, and you get nothing more than 5500 from FAFSA student loan, the school may say we will allow the 29K to be spread over 10 months with 0% interest. 3K a month is still large, but come sophomore yr, with the 18K, plus a bump from FAFSA loan to 6500, you would be looking at 1K a month. That includes room and board, no Pell, no other scholarship.
Finally, have you received the merit package yet for CoC?
I know I gave a lot to think about, but it seems like you want CoC, yet cost is an issue. I just wanted to offer some more ideas you can investigate when it comes to paying for the school.
Accept the scholarship. It is not tied to any school. You will have time to figure out the details of where and how later.
