I saw this on the usna.edu/admissions page.

"The Office of Admissions will not offer any public briefings on Thursday, January 31. We apologize for the inconvenience."

Anyone know what is going on there today? Just wondering, er, hoping, if there is a big push to get offers of appointment out today.

lol ... These times of "hurry up and wait" do nurture some intriguing "wonderings." :confused:I'd not bet a plug nickel on your speculation, but hope springs eternal this last day of January 2013.:thumb:

Keep the faith. :angel:Exercise your patience along with your push-ups and pull-ups.:jump1:

Maybe the briefing officer has the flu!:barf:And so does her backup.:jaw:

If I were to make any guess at all it would simply be that they will be busy handling last minute nomination slates, etc. etc. Addressing deadlines, nothing more. From their own website: Most candidates will be notified of their final status by April 15.

My only other speculation would be of the bad news variety and they are in short notice meetings to address it. A lot of budget cuts, and rumors of budget cuts, coming out in NROTC over the past few days. Could it be that class size will be cut?

In any case there is no point in speculating. It's probably nothing, and it's certainly nothing that you can control, and it definitely not a rush to get out appointments. There is no hurry for that.

When I saw the original post, I visited the the USNA Admissions page. The following information was posted:

"The Office of Admissions will not offer any public briefings on Thursday, January 31. We apologize for the inconvenience.

January 31 is the deadline for receipt of nominations. The deadline for the candidate portion of the application is March 1."

I assume the reason that they will not be having public briefings today is because they have the last of the nominations flowing into the system. Just a guess though.

My guess is that there was just some confict -- maybe a very important all-hands meeting. I believe they will continue briefings through the rest of the year for rising seniors or those who may be applying from college next year.

Can't resist any more...

I saw this notice yesterday and was mildly curious... but after all these replies I have to ask: what sort of briefings does the Office of Admissions usually offer? To whom? And why did they only mention "public briefings"? Is there such a thing as "private briefings"? Thanks!

No. "Briefings" are USNA code words for admissions presentations. Absent need for specific face-to-face, one-on-one discussion with a specific candidate, these are traditionally group gatherings with a junior officer/admission officer talking the group through an overhead. Unless they've recently upgraded?

Unlike arranging an appointment for a personal admissions interview as might be requested and done at a civilian institution, generally, there is no such thing at USNA to my knowledge. Visit with a coach might be a more personal scenario.

Be aware that Admissions/CGO is moving its offices to the vicinity of the Visitors Center in Halsey Fieldhouse this week and next... probably too busy with the move to do the briefing. The upside is that visitors to the Yard won't have to ferret out Leahy Hall to find Admissions in the future. The offices will be on the second deck over the Visitors Center. Sorry it wasn't more nefarious.

BTW, CGO will schedule one on one meetings with candidates if notified in advance, especially if there is a specific issue involved; eg, medical problem, glitch in the application, so on. It's just that the scheduled briefings are more convenient for the casual visitors to the Yard, especially those who are experiencing their initial contact with NAVY.
I'm not omniscient, we just had HUB last weekend and this came up in casual conversation.
