    DS is an AROTC 3 year AD. He's been medically qualified and we are g2g.. but we have not contacted, or been contacted by, our ROO or anyone with the school. Is that normal? Should he be communicating with anyone this summer or do we just let it crank up this fall? just looking for advice....

    Mudspokes, our DS is 4 yr AROTC awardee and I was thinking the same thing about the lack of contact. However, he was just contacted last night by someone and will touch base with them today. They (ROTC units) may be starting the process now. In looking at other threads and getting information from others who have already done this previously this all looks normal. Let the ride begin...:thumb:

    sheriff is correct, they are just getting started now. Remember the incoming class is 2 months away.

    Cadre PCS and train during this time. They typically run a skeletal crew, and now with the furloughs for civilians in the unit, the manpower will be impacted even more. They are going to be showing the impact of sequestration in @ 2 weeks when they start sitting down.

    They are dealing with closing up paperwork for the cadets that commissioned only a few weeks ago.
    ~~~ Our DS commissioned last yr. May 26th. He was in contact with the det. over the summer because in the AF, the det. was the one that got his orders. Orders are given @ 6 weeks out.
    ~~~ There are also threads about summer training mishaps...showed up and it was cancelled, cadets needed new assignments.

    ~~~ Some cadets may still be waiting for their waivers.
    This is all done on a skeletal crew.
    If your DS is clear to go, I wouldn't be concerned until 30 days out. No offense, but he is at the bottom of the pile when it comes to priorities. He has none, except report date for ROTC and what he needs to bring to contract.
    ~~~I.E. original birth certificate.

    This is the time to walk away from this site and make memories. It is the time to start trusting them....there is a method to their madness.

    Don't worry, it will all be good.

    Best thoughts.
    Thank him for wanting to serve this great nation!
    Thank you for supporting him!

    OBTW, the size of the det is a factor too. A large det is going to have a larger cadre, and they can spread their wealth more. If your child is going to a small det. than it will also be a factor regarding how fast they can get back.

    They are busy dealing with all the current cadets now. Especially with cancellations and changes in assignments for things like CULP and CTLT. Those that just commissioned or who are commissioning at the end of the summer.

    They will be in touch at some point with any instructions or paperwork.

    Keep in mind that some high schools haven't even held graduation yet so, for them, it isn't summer yet. My son was told to expect a package in the summer. I would guess that might mean late July. :smile:

    All the UCs except for Berkeley, and some CSUs like Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, just ended last Friday.

    It was about a month before college started that my daughter was contacted by the cadre, got the big packet, etc.

    DS just got a packet in the mail from the AFROTC Detachment at VMI with paperwork to be filled out and request for certified copies of birth certificate and a few others. One of the things included was a form to fill out for direct deposite. This requires a checking account. If your cadet doesn't have one, now would be a good time to get one started. Someone else posted on the site about getting a passport to provide for things like Engineers Without Boarders and other experiences during future summers. there is a significant lead time for passports and now may be a great time to get through the process.

    Great information from all. Really thankful for this site and all those who share their knowledge and experience. DS will be on campus beginning Monday for Project GO language. We will sit back and wait to be contacted...

    Thanks again to all.
