My DS is turning his nomination paperwork to his MOCs next week and asked my advice on what the priority should be for nomination preference at the academies. He has applied to the USNA and USMMA and has visited both and enjoyed the experience. I think he would be happy a either place. I though his profile might be a little low for the USNA, but might be more competitive at the USMMA. His SAT was 640 for Math, 690 for Critical Reading. He has 3.5 weighted GPA. He is an AP Scholar with Distinction - he had a top score of 5 on his AP Calculus AB test. He is 3 year letterman in wrestling - 4th year coming up, and a 2 year letterman in football. He is a ranked wrestler in the state. He also plays clarinet in his schools top band - he was band student of the year last year. He did well on the CFA and has passed the DODMERB physical.

Our area is really competitive for USNA nominations - less so for the USMMA. I was thinking he should make the USSMA his top choice, but only if he had a decent shot of getting in. Any opinions?

His first choice should be the one he wants to go to the most. Trying to game the system so to speak can work heavily against you if they sniff it out. I don't know how much things have changed in WA since I lived there but I had no issue getting a nom from both Senators and my Rep. and my resume was much less stellar.

You can get noms to KP from any MOC in your state. I would think the MOCs in E.WA get less action for KP than W.WA.

best of luck to your son in his decisions.

Best of luck to your son in his decisions. It sounds like he is a strong candidate for either school. My DS chose USMMA as his first choice... and USNA was his "fall back school". (He also had a plan B and a plan C). We learned that most kids at the USMMA chose USMMA as their first choice. (although I am sure many of them also applied to other service academies).

Tell your son to pick his top choice based on his honest top choice. USMMA doesn't want kids that think it's easier to get into. It's not. The ratio of larger school vs. smaller school make it just as competitive. It's maybe "not as known", which makes it the "best kept secret" in colleges (so I've been told)! Possibly discuss pluses and minuses of both schools, consider who has the better sea experiences, etc. They are both wonderful schools. It's an honor to attend either. Best of luck.
