Insiders... I’m hoping you can help me track down some information. I’ve been trying for months, but keep reaching dead ends.

Who is the women’s club softball coach and how does one go about getting involved with the team, tryouts, etc.

It seems that since it is not officially IC, nor IM, it’s in this weird category that is hard to uncover.

My DD has an opportunity to be a Team Manager for the Women’s basketball team, but would rather have the opportunity to play softball. She doesn’t want to string them along, but is hesitant to commit before understanding fully the opportunity.

Anyone have any insight or connections to any data sources?

    Thanks in advance.

It could be that there is an officer who is coaching the club, or possibly an upperclass cadet. Unless someone from the team pipes up you may not be able to find the information you are looking for. My C2C looked into this her freshman year and has told me you basically find someone on the team after BCT and find out when practice is and then show up. Her year there were no official tryouts. She wasn't able to remain on the team due to Recondo after the school year started. After her first year, she felt her skills weren't adequate enough to participate in the club softball program.

    Fastpitch Softball
    Point of Contact 333-9083
    Alt Point of Contact 333-3438

That was what was listed in the Cadet Clubs listing that I saw.
Anyway, being a manager of the women's basketball team gives your daughter the advantage of IC scheduling and other advantages afforded to ICs during a tough freshman year.

I had several friends on the team when I was at USAFA. If those contact numbers don't pan out let me know and I will reach out to a couple to try and get you better information.

    Bad Phone Numbers

I’ve tried all the phone numbers published on the club/IM page and none of them worked. The Athletic Department gave me a different number for which no one answered nor called me back.

All assistance will be greatly appreciated.

I’m familiar with those numbers and they do not work. No answer, disconnected... if I recall. I call the Athletic Department and was pointed yet a different direction.

We know that the manager role would give DD IC status... her first passion is softball, second is basketball. She doesn’t have a D1 game, unfortunately. Her concern, and what she wants to weigh, is the pro’s and con’s of both given the T-zo gap, commitment to her squad, etc.

Any words of wisdom in terms of how a manager is viewed? Yes, I know there are IC privileges, but... is it worth it? My daughter wants to be as informed as possible before making a decision.

I am the parent of a C1C female cadet. Her 4th Class roommate was (and still is) a member of the Girl's softball team. I know the player is currently home for Spring Break in Iowa. Contact me by email (dohdean@aol.com) and I will put you in touch with her after Spring Break. I can send you her Academy email address privately but would rather not post a cadet's email address here.

current team member sounds like a better bet. My close friend was a captain, but graduated. The others were more of acquaintances. As for how manager is viewed, as a freshmen? Not good at all. This is due to the fact that a lot of freshman have become managers for the sole purpose of getting out of squadron responsibilities/training. Now, I am sure this is not the case for everyone and had I not been able to play on the team freshman year, I would have done anything to stay close to the sport, but a word of caution, being a manager for an IC team will defeinitely be a point of contention and your DD will have to work extra hard to prove herself to the squadron. This can start in basic, and if she is a "rockstar" in basic, then I would bet it wouldn't be a huge deal, but that is a tall order.

IMHO, it is definitely not worth it. You miss out on a lot with the squadron due to IC status.

Thank you for the insights. I have been concerned about the “friction” that could be created for having IC status, but not being a legitimate athlete. Even more convinced than ever now that DD needs to figure out the softball thing. I’ve been following the IC v. non-IC thread for several weeks now and don’t think it is worth the risk and the things she would potentially miss out on.

    I appreciate the insights.

    Softball

Skymom, Let me know to about trying out for the softball team. I have been heavily recruited to play softball but chose USAFA. I have been following the team closely and am waiting on the results from how the team did in Columbus GA this past weekend.
