    Hello All,

Just checked the AFROTC portal and DS was awarded an AFROTC Type 7 scholarship (he will be a non-STEM major)! I am assuming it is from the first board.:thumb:

(Edited to correct from "4-year" to "Type 7")

    Congrats.

FWIW, all AFROTC are 4 years, there are no 3 yrs offered, it is the type that differs. IE: Type 1,2 or 7. A 7 can be converted to a 3 yr 2 by the recipient, but they do not offer a 2 e year from the HSSP.

You are now in the enviable position of which path to take since they have other ROTC options. Time to think about the life after college they want to serve in.

It is going to matter financially.

Type 1 is free ride tuition.
Type 2 is up to 18k tuition. Key words up to. If tuition is 15k, that is all they will write the check for. That extra 3k is not merit and will not be placed towards R &B.
Type 7 is up to the IS cost for public. You can go OOS or private as long as it is not a penny more than IS public. IE TAMU charges IS rates for some, if you are in VA you can use a 7. UMDCP OOS will not cut you a break, thus, you will need to convert it to a 3 year 2.

Thus why people for AFROTC will say awarded 1,2 or 7.

Thanks, again. I believe (at least some of) my DS's AFROTC school choices will provide IS for Type 7 winners.

Pima - do you mean VA schools charge IS for scholarship winners?
How about a student who would be considered OOS (we are being transferred out of VA this summer) attending VA Tech with a type 2?

    Thanks for your help!!

No I was not saying VA schools. TAMU is Texas, but if you are from VA and get at least 1k in a scholarship from them, they will charge IS.

Now, if you are military, some states have a loophole for military members.

In NC, if you are military and your child is accepted, they will consider the child IS even if you PCS or retire. Even if you own your home and sell it, buy another in a different state they will honor it since the military forced you to move. Your child has shown residency by obtaining a Driver's license and registering to vote.

It is a little known loophole. I do not know about VA. You probably need to call VT. I have to say VT IMPO with 3 different college experiences are the nicest, sweetest people. It may come down to doing a lot of research for the loophole. Try the base education office.

One thing to realize is you are type 2, even OOS you would be under the 18k marker for tuition. The problem will be R &B for you if they charge OOS.

To assist posters and lurkers, can you share your stats, including majors.

Colleges for AFROTC do not matter. Majors do.

    Again, congrats!

DS had to list his choices of major and I don't know which was selected. Does that answer come with the paperwork?

He had Mechanical engineering, Computer science, and Civil engineering.

Congrats to all who have received an AFROTC scholarship, glad to see they are finally coming out. I must admit though that I am surprised that there are so few scholarship award winners posting. In past years the board really lit up!

    Waiting....

I was excited to see some results finally posted today. My DS interviewed the first week of December, and I asked if he would be in time for the first AFROTC board. The Commander at the Det told me that the issue was that the board for the major that my DS selected wouldn't meet until January. (Computer Science/Computer Engineering). The message on the portal at this point says that he would be boarded the last week in January with results in the middle of February. Perhaps the low number of recipients posting indicates that only the December board results have been released at this point.

Still waiting on pins and needles!
