AFROTC great news! but it's bitter sweat

It is possible at Baylor that the R&B is also one of those perks, so it is not an issue of how things are billed, or how scholarships are applied. U. of Portland and Grand Canyon University which are two of my DD's choices said
They "waive" room and board for all scholarship recipients, and I believe that is both Army and AF at UP, but only know the Army for sure.

My DD won a Type 7 last year and is attending University of St Thomas in Minnesota. They have a great subsidy program for the ROTC students.

High School Scholarship Program - UST Subsidy
4 Year Type 1
  • AFROTC Pays: Full Tuition
  • UST Pays: Room and board
  • Student Pays: $0
4 Year Type 2
  • AFROTC Pays: Up to $18000 per year
  • UST Pays: Remainder of tuition & room and board
  • Student Pays: $0
3 Year Type 2 (converted from a 4 Year Type 7)
    • AFROTC Pays: Up to $18000 last 3 years
    • UST Pays: Full tuition (first year only), remainder of tuition & room and board (last 3 years only)
    • Student Pays: Room and board (first year only)

@FalconsRock Not to hurt your head even more, but keep in mind if any scholarship money, regardless of source, is used to pay room and board then that will be treated as taxable income by the IRS (and perhaps your state?)... so you'll be paying taxes on that. Just want to make sure you're prepared.

I would much rather have paid taxes on room and board than actually pay the room and board.

Thanks for that information. Would it be our tax or our DD's tax? In other words, whose tax return would that be on?
