AFROTC ICSP Results

I am confused momx2.

CSO is flying, are you saying it was too risky because of seasonal allergies?

I did not realize seasonal allergies were a DQ for rated. Our DS does not have any allergies, but our close friend's DS that commissioned in 12 with DS via USNA got a rated slot; he is allergic to grass. Thus, I just assumed AFROTC would waive it too.

Again, waivers now are not like they were in 2008.

I do know as a wife of a WSO, Afrin is a big time No-No so I can see seasonal allergies being an issue. As a rated officer, Bullet never took anything, but aspirin. No Nyquil, no cough medicine, no benadryl. Allergies could be a huge issue due to the ears.

Good luck to him.

OBTW the reason I asked was some won't take the CSO/ABM because it means they can't get UPT. They are seeing it as too risky to take the chance of getting a scholarship, but not getting their career goal. This was why I was asking....you stated it was too risky. I was wondering if it meant too risky for not getting to be a pilot.

Pima,
When the CSO express scholarship was discussed with the eligible cadets, DS really wanted to take it due to his desire to be a pilot. We did some checking to see if allergies would interfere with being a CSO. Under prerequisites on the following site it states that seasonal allergies (aka hayfever) is a disqualifier for both pilots and CSOs.

DS then asked his flight commander what would happen if he takes the express scholarship and later is found ineligible. He was told that if he wanted that scholarship he'd have to be "potentially navigator qualified." He was also told that when he goes for his full physical, if they say that he doesn't qualify he will lose the scholarship, but not his contract. Due to this, he decided that might be too risky and he passed on that scholarship.
He was told months ago that he was one of the best scholarship candidates they had this year, so he felt good about waiting for the outcome of the March board. All worked out in the end.

I'm not sure if this information is relevant to this thread, but on April 4th of this week, 16 cadets were sworn in at DS's DET on the baseball field prior to the Military Appreciation Game. Last year, in April, 12 cadets were sworn in at the same game. Our son was one of those last year. So they had 4 more this year than last. I'm not even going to begin to try to analyze that. Just providing info as someone had requested in an earlier thread.

Has anyone heard anything about ICSP's awarded this spring being withdrawn?

Yup. My 3.5 year scholarship basically got pulled yesterday, so the scholarship consists of only stipend for now. Luckily, I'm not as bad off as others. I feel like they should have just not given any scholarships rather than this. Hopefully they bring it back soon.

So, are you saying come next fall you will get a stipend, but no scholarship?

If they bring it back, will you have to be re-boarded, or will they just initiate the scholarship again?

Maybe someone can share the details - this is all I heard from my DS - he's not IC so he didn't have specifics.

It's a shame if this is what was sacrificed to keep EA's up. The top cadets get IC and some end up having to transfer or quit without it. What a heartbreak to get one and then have it taken back.

Its only stipend for this semester. They already contracted us, so the plan seems to be to bring tuition and fees back ASAP, at least by next semester, but only stipend until then. No re-boarding, since we're technically still on scholarship.

So are you saying that you had a 3.5, and they didn't pay spring? That has to hurt at this late of date.

That has to hurt at this late of date.
Wow! While it has often been mentioned that you should choose a college that you can afford without an AFROTC scholarship.....this is VERY short notice to the people who have to ante up quite a few additional dollars.

I agree Agagles. I would have thought that the 3.5 yr scholarship would have been paid back in Feb. I couldn't imagine the stress because now those cadets probably can't register for next fall classes since their accounts would be locked due to an outstanding balance.

I could not imagine trying finding 5-10K in a few weeks

Gee, I guess then there is not much hope for those of us patiently waiting for results of ICSP Phase 2 ... if they are reversing receipients from phase 1...

On the bright side...all these budget cuts should keep the interest rates on student loans down..

That's my understanding - and I haven't seen anyone on here report anything different.

My son is a freshman this year. He was just awarded a 3.5 yr AFROTC scholarship on 3/25/13. He signed paperwork and took his oath on 3/28/13. They quickly paid his Spring 13 tuition, as we just...

It seems since March this is becoming a common issue...some dets are doing one thing and another is doing something else.

citychic, got theirs pulled 5 days ago, but mom2x's DS was paid already. It might be that mom2x's DS got his in early enough that they paid it. Afterall, how do they go back to the college and say hand us back the tuition?

It is sad that the cadets are going night and day answers from their cadres. It is like the EA list, some dets are saying 1700 were awarded with 545 on the wit list, some are saying 2245 were awarded.

I wonder who is minding the store at AFROTCHQ? In the 5 yrs here I have never seen so much contradiction between what some cadets are being told and what other cadets are being told.

Good news! The scholarships were brought back about a week ago. It seems to me that the Air Force is playing a big budget juggling game.

I'm glad to see that the scholarships are back! I do have a question, though. If the ICSP was offered in the spring semester, then wasn't your spring semester already paid for? So what would have happened is that you would not have gotten a refund for the spring semester had the scholarship not been brought back, correct? When our DS received his 3.5 yr ICS in February of 2012, we had already paid his tuition for that semester. So when the tuition was paid for that semester by the AFROTC, we received a big fat refund from the University! So unless I'm missing something, no one who received a 3.5 year was "expecting" to have the spring semester paid for by ROTC, as it was already paid for by the student/parents. I'm sure I'm confused and I would appreciate any help on this! :)
