I am applying to the Academy the third time. Im currently doing AFROTC and just received an AFROTC nomination from ERAU to the Air Force Academy. What I am wondering is, how do these nominations work and what will the Academy look at? PFA? GPA? SAT's? how do they choose appointments out of ROTC nominations? Also, are these appointments mixed in with JROTC nominations?

This is a good question. Can someone please explain this? I also have an ROTC nomination and would like to know how many get ROTC noms and if that includes JROTC and other categories.

    Thanks!

    Hmm...

Well, first, CONGRATULATIONS on receiving the nomination!!! :thumb:

How they're processed...to be honest, I don't think I've been asked that before.

SO...rather than guess...I'll call USAFA/RRS tomorrow and see what they say and then will report back.

Okay, I spoke with the folks in USAFA/RRS this morning and what they said surprised me.

ROTC nominee's are looked at just like any other "post high school, college applicant" nominee.

In other words, "it's a nomination..."

BUT...the person I spoke with DID say this: "...you know sir...an ROTC applicant, with an ROTC nomination...and a good college GPA...that's gonna really stand out...if they've done all the other things well...it's a plus!"

O ok, so basically getting an appointment through the AFROTC nomination is pretty hard? But it will improve your whole application? Now, do you know if the AFROTC nom is used as a back up plan if the Academy doesn't appoint you through the senators or congressman?

It should not be seen as a back up plan, it should be seen as another source for a nom...the more sources the more slates you are on. That is like saying a congressional nom is a back up for the Sen nom. Highest WCS wins the nom. They all have an allotted number that can be charged by law. The key is to get as many noms as possible, because when your feet hit the ground at the AFA nobody cares who the source was or if you were principal or had an LOA. You are all equal again!

I think you actually missed the big point Flieger was stating.

They see an ROTC candidate with an ROTC nom and a good gpa as a very good candidate. It is a :thumb:

From the yrs I have been here, I will say that the majority of the 2nd timers with STRONG gpas in college get apptd.

Notice STRONG...pull a 2.5 in college and ROTC and that is not going to be considered STRONG.

If your AFJROTC unit is distinguished are you able to apply for a nomination through them?

If AF JrROTC has designated your unit as a "Distinguished Honors Unit" or words to that effect (I haven't read the precise wording recently) then yes, you can receive a nomination through them. The JrROTC commander at your school can explain the process.

How do you actually go about getting a ROTC nomination from your detachment? I am currently in the NROTC program at Villanova University looking for a nomination to USAFA. They have told me and two other kids who are applying to USNA that they are unfamiliar with the process and will look into it. That was 3 weeks ago...

NROTC units are not eligible to nominate individuals to any other SA than USNA.

Even a designated naval honor school?

The OP's question is about ROTC, not JROTC. In JROTC, of course, honor units can cross nominate. At least for USNA. Not sure about AFA. Not true for regular ROTC. I guess the assumption is that they have time and money invested so they don't want to give it away.

There are only two designated naval honor schools in the US, Tabor Academy in MASS and Admiral Farragut Academy in FLA. Your quoted Code does not address Army and Navy JROTC units of distinction.

I was told by my ALO that receiving a nomination to USAFA from an NROTC unit is not a problem and is completely possible. Is that not true? Where can I find information on the ROTC nomination process? I have done some research but I am coming up empty handed.

Perhaps you misunderstood your ALO and perhaps the reason that your unit, along with yourself, is coming up emptyhanded is that the nomination source doesn't exist. Here is Luigi's quote from US Code Title 10 in it's entirety:

Only AFROTC can nominate to AFA. Certain secondary military schools apply to the specific military branches for special honor designation. These are separate from ROTC. Your college is not one of these honor schools. A ROTC nomination is not a big deal. An appointment from ROTC nominations is a true needle in a haystack. Only 20 nationwide annually including both ROTC and JROTC. The true value of a ROTC nomination is as a conduit for your leadership to provide an extra written evaluation. Perhaps AFA will accept an unsolicited letter of recommendation from him instead. Ask.
