I will be attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach starting Fall 2010. I have a Type II AFROTC scholarship and am majoring in Aerospace Engineering. I plan on reapplying to the Academy next year.

Anybody else have similar plans of attending Embry-Riddle, participating in ROTC & reapplying, etc.?

I attended a different University, did AFROTC, applied for the first time and got in without too much trouble. As long as you keep your grades up and participate in EC's, you'll be golden.

If this were to somehow happen, then, yes, I would definitely consider doing that.

I did AFROTC this last year and got an appointment to the USAFA Class of 2014! Work hard, go to extra PT, volunteer for leadership positions, and keep up your grades and you should have a pretty good shot at getting in. There is an AFROTC nomination to USAFA that not a whole lot of people know about. If your detachment commander doesn't notify you by the middle of October about it I would ask him/her about it. Good luck!

I would be up front with your det commander when you get there that this is your intention. Most commanders whole heartily support their cadets who desire to do this. The reason I say to be up front is that for the ROTC nom they will ask for the command support/rec. You want him to know as soon as you are feet on the ground so he can be ready to write that rec. You don't want to tell him Oct 1 and it be do NLT Oct 15th. ER has a large det so there maybe several cadets applying, and his job is not just about writing AFA recs. He will be busy writing recs for Jrs going up for their AFSC, Sophs going up for Summer training boards, on top of reviewing AD members that are apart of the corps, just to name a few things that happen behind the scenes at a ROTC det.

My son's roommate at USAFA did just that - went to E/R for a year in Aero Eng then got his appointment the following year to USAFA. He still sees his friends from E/R several times a year and has only great things to say about his experiences there.

    Good luck!

My daughter is also attending E/R this fall on a Type II. It was her plan B. She was wait-listed for AFA. She will be in meteorology. At this point she is planning to reapply.

It's great to know that there are so many going the ROTC route. Attending a 4-year university and participating in ROTC seems like a great way of adding points to our application scores let alone being commissioned into the Air Force. Best of luck to each of you.

I've just joined AFROTC and even though I only just attended my first meet yesterday I loved it and my end goal is to attend USAFA but I feel a little guilt for leaving AFROTC. Are the commanders supportive of their cadets leaving for USAFA? If so, when should I let them know? I feel that in a way I'd be "ditching" my detachment.

Commanders are generally supportive as far as I know (from the few prior ROTC guys who I've run across)

I think it would be a good idea to let them know about your intentions as soon as possible.
