Hi,
I'm a sophomore in college hoping to join AROTC...in May I ended up going to the hospital for alcohol poisoning and just finished going through counseling for alcohol abuse. Since basically early summer I've been sober and haven't touched alcohol or marijuana...Is there any hope for me in getting a waiver? Thanks.

"Is there any hope..."

This is something that can ONLY be answered by the service. You need to go to the ROTC unit you wish to join and be OPEN and HONEST with them and discuss this.

They can put you in contact with the folks that will make the decision.

How exactly would the unit play into my getting a waiver? Would the recommendation of my XO have any sway?

It is my "opinion" that if you are in the unit already...your performance will be key to any recommendations that the unit would submit. I would tend, again, MHO, that a positive recommendation from active military in the unit would be beneficial and would be considered by any waiver authority.

But you won't know until you speak with the right people.
