and so it begins

Cold front came in last night!

Much better weather today, 77 degrees and low humidity!

so what time today will the bell ringing start? Definately after lunch time, but how much after lunch time.

I am a bundle of nerves :)

This is the last hill of the roller coaster ride that has been over 5 years!
From our late appointment date of May 8, 2006, to an indoc that started early July 2006, to the earliest recognition in recent history (maybe earliest ever?!?) for the class of 2010, to those darn sea terms and sea projects, and the dark ages, to a set back, and the wonderful parent's weekends, to wonderful christmas gifts from exotic ports, to now licencsing... and soon graduation.

But graduation is the end of the ride, licensing is the final curve heading into the station.......

Who is nervous today?

The web link is up and running for the bell ringing so it can not be long now! It is on the parents' page.

The link says 12:30.

Guess I can set my outlook for an alarm for 12:25 !

Since the Coast Guard no longer post questions on line, is there a past link for past questions? What study aid would you suggest for your DS to study to help with the test when he becomes a senior?

I had a good experience with the 3rd-Chief disc from hawsepipe.net. when I just upgraded to 2A/E The key is not to focus on specific questions but identify weak areas. The discs includes a ton of reference material and will walk you through any of the math problems.
If they still use it at KP, the Hubert textbook for electricity. It was a huge help to me and several of the drawings are right out of the book.

pass rates

Rumor is 85% for engineers and less for deckies but this is not confirmed!

I just got off the phone with my son and he says Engineers were 83% and Deckies were 70%. Not sure if this is an absolute, but it is probably close. He told me that there were a lot of people that missed a passing grade by one question.

How soon can one re-take the test? And what are the consequences of not passing on the first try? What is the usual passing rate for both?

Our son (a Deckie) did pass on the first round. He said the retakes are on Monday and Tuesday.

This is from the USCG Guide for Administration of Merchant Marine Examinations

If an applicant for an upper level officer endorsement as defined in 46 CFR 10.107 (unlimited 3rd Mate or 3rd Assistant Engineer) fails three or more sections, a complete re-examination must be administered. On the subsequent exam, if the applicant again fails three or more sections, at least 3 months must lapse before another complete examination is attempted, and a new examination fee is required. If an applicant fails one or two sections of an examination, the applicant may be retested twice as is necessary on each failed section during the next 3 months. If the applicant does not successfully complete each failed section within the three (3) month period, a complete examination must be administered after a lapse of at least three (3) months from the date of the last retest, and a new examination fee is required. The 3 month retest period may be extended by the OCMI if the applicant presents discharges documenting sea time which prevented the taking of a retest during the 3 month period. The retest period may not be extended beyond 7 months from the initial examination (46CFR 11.217(a)(1)).

The scheduling of retests is at the discretion of the OCMI.

pass rates vary.. I think someone mentioned that this year Mass Maritime had 58% of their deckies pass first time and the KP deckies went around 70%. Normally all will have passed well within the 3 month retest period. It's been my observation over the years that the engineers almost always have a higher first time pass rate than the mates.
