Hi, I'm a 10th grader and I go to a public school in MD.

I have been working on a commercial fishing vessel since I was 12.

I'm on the swim team and I've qualified for regionals in the 500 yard and 200 yard freestyle

I've gotten all A's throughout high school

I was on the CYC sailing racing team

I haven't taken the SAT yet but I'm going to this spring

I'm attending the Hugh O'Brien Youth leadership seminar In may

I'm planning to take the charter boats captain course at my local community college

I'm taking AP chemistry next year along with AP world History and senior year I'm taking a physics course at the community college along with AP biology, AP English and another AP history class I haven't decided on.

I'm signed up to take a HAM radio operators class

Hobbies are hunting and fly fishing

I've never done boy scouts or civil air patrol

Any suggestions on what classes to take, clubs to join, or anything else that could help me get in I'd greatly appreciate it.

I joined Civil Air Patrol at 17. It's not too late. You could also join JROTC, which could potentially give you an extra nomination

It's a leadership camp run by the American Legion. Check with your local post to learn more and/or search online. You wouldn't be able to do it until next year.

Maybe I missed it but I didn't see any athletics. Athletics is important but perhaps your unique experiences might overcome it. But at the same time I wouldn't be banking on it if you can fit anything in at school or elsewhere. Cross country, track, or any other organized sport you might like or excel at.

I have to say I was surprised to see this on the USMA forum. I think USNA might be more attracted to your experience and resume. I suppose, of course, that the feeling might not be mutual.

Good luck. I think your wise to be considering these things while in 10th grade! :thumb:

I do not know that much about boys state other then it is a great opportunity to be exposed to government and leadership. At 16, Civil Air Patrol is great and you are not too old. Depending on the squadron, you can be exposed to some very good military mentors and pilots who oftentimes are retired military. The leadership opportunities are certainly available and you have the opportunity for exposure to aviation. Typical squadrons will have pretty regular O-rides and be involved in search and rescue scenerios and real time rescues. Good luck and keep working hard toward your dream.

Boys State is a leadership conference that runs for a week. You do have to be sponsored by an American Legion Post. As an attendee, you form a government and run for office. Google "MD Boys State". You have to be a Junior in HS. Some high schools do not promote the opportunity, but contact the Post and let them know (if) you are interested.

    Math

I didn't see where you listed a math progression. Get up to AP Calc. Also, look to be a captain on that swim team you are on. No secret formula, just do everything lol Really, try to excel in some areas and at least be in the mean of applicants in all others with one or two weaknesses and that gets you in the running. Boys State is VERY well looked upon by WP. Go to the American Legion Website and start researching soon. http://www.mdlegion.org/boysstate.htm

Be consistent with your activities. Continue to go for leadership roles. Compile a neat resume with years participated and activities in categories of Athletic, Leadership, Extra Curricular, Other like Hobbies. Civil Air Patrol is a great advantage. I'm in it, and it definitely set me apart as an applicant b/c it showed I was serious about the military, I knew what I was getting into, plus I had all the training and went to numerous encampments in the summer, mini mini basic training. Plus, if you do well in the program, you gain leadership experience and maybe a good letter of recommendation.

Academy is looking for a well rounded Scholar Athlete Leader. Constantly ask yourself if you fit that bill. Know you can always do more. Follow passions, as much as you want a full resume, don't fluff it with things that don't matter to you. Good luck.
