DS did his online application for the AFA and it states
Applicant (your application is under consideration)-Competitive

So my question is this, after printing off and reading the intructions for Precandidates, we just wait until his status changes to candidate and then they will send something in the mail, and then we start at that time? Or should he begin preparing some of the little things now like his LORs and his congressinoal nomination letters? Thanks

It can't hurt to start now, but there is no rush. Many of us started this process a year ago for class of 2015....and are still waiting to hear from USAFA. Just take one step at a time, stay organized. Read as much as you can...this forum is a wonderful place to learn about this process. Buckle up, you are in for quite a ride

I would start asking NOW for anything you'll need from your school such as transcript requests, counselor, teacher and coach recommendations. Your son might want to print out about a half dozen resumes to hand to his LOR requesters and to let them know he needs to complete his application (and submit his LORs) by the end of June. Even with an artificial timeline he'll need to be persistent in cajoling and reminding the school people. Remember...once school is out for the Summer it will usually be difficult/impossible to get anything from most of the staff/teachers until Fall.

The more he can get done during the Summer (including visiting/applying to Plan B schools, DoDMERB, interviews, ROTC application, essay writing) the less rushed he'll be on the weekends in the Fall and the earlier he should have his application completed and hopefully reviewed. Just an opinion from a parent whose son started early (based on advice on this forum) and is glad he did.

    Good Luck!

Thanks for the in sight, and the great advice! I totally agree with all that you have written, the more we can get done now the less DS is rushing at the end. What about the USAFA Form 148 that is needed to be completed with the transcript? Or should I just worry about getting his transcript and senior class schedule now, and do the form later?

Print out Form 148 and give it to your school's registrar. They will send the school profile, transcripts through junior year, and senior year schedule to USAFA. Aglages is 100% correct on getting as much done early as possible.:thumb:

It won't take long to receive the login information. I'd wait it out and start when you get the access code.
