Applying as a college sophomore

Hello all,

I show up on this board every year around this time. :) I'm a sophomore in college, and I applied to the Academy as a senior in high school, and I started to apply again last year but was unable to finish my application for various reasons (no math class, for one, for a teacher evaluation). This year, I feel I'm on track in every way- I'm getting good grades, playing a club sport, and I even have a job as an RA that has taught me a lot of skills that I am willing to bet are valuable for an officer. I'm taking a few math classes now and have gotten to know some professors that I think will write me strong recommendations.

I feel good about my application, but I know there will be questions about why I'm not just graduating from my current school and pursuing OCS. I'll definitely do that if I can't get into the Academy, because ultimately I want to be a Coast Guard officer, but I really like school and the idea of starting over as a freshman is fine by me. I know I'm technically allowed to apply, but is the Academy likely to reject me because I'm two years into college already, and is there anything I can do to counteract that?

I like to see it as I know what I'm doing and have gained lots of skills that will help me be the best I can at the Academy :)

Sorry for the long-winded post, and thanks so much for any advice you can give me! I'm really just nervous

I had a classmate who had 3 years of college under his belt before entering the Academy :thumb:

Thanks for the advice, I'll check out the blog! And BR2011, it's good to know that it can happen!

Applying as college freshman

Hey twentyten. Good luck to you! I applied last year and received the TWE, and am applying again and hoping for the BFE.
