Agree with all points discussed above.
I believe there's more "pride" for SA appointments/scholarships. Relatively all 3.0+ GPA students can attend colleges, granted that some are more prestigious than others. Many scholarships/grants are subjective to ethnicity and parents' work place and income, etc, besides academics and extracurricular involvements. Point is it seems "normal" that smart students will get some kind of scholarships with some grants to various colleges. However, when it comes to the SA's, there seem to be more a distinction. Regardless of the SA "dollar value", the fact that these smart top 10% senior students are going into the "military college" made many of the staffs, parents, and other people in the auditorium "proud". Hence, they received overwhelming standing ovation. At least that's what I experienced during my DS's USAF appointment presentation by the ALO at his Awards Ceremony night. That brought tears to our eyes.....
