Appointment to Class of 2015

My son was deferred from Early Action.

He got his appointment on March 29.

So, yes, there is a chance...a good one. Hang in there and like the others I urge him to keep updating his file over the next few months.

PM me if he can't get an interview and I will try to help.

Our cadet too was deferred from EA and received an appointment at the end of April.
In fact Boss51 and ours were classmates. Both did quite well at USCGA and are now fantastic LTJG's.
Keep the faith :thumb:

I'm sorry, but what is a deferral letter and its meaning?

Congratulations to all and good luck to those still waiting!

Lee2015, If an Early Action applicant is not offered an appointment, they are rarely rejected outright; rather, they are "deferred" for a second look during the regular application period (assuming they update their application as directed.) Several of the parents in this forum have kids currently attending USCGA who received their appointments during this deferral period.

100% accurate.

You could be an AAP. :thumb:

Thanks, but I'll leave that to you guys. I just hope to be a USCGA Dad...

I just wanted to add my 2 cents!

Our son was also deferred last year and we were really surprised (not to sound snobby), because we did not realize how competitive the class of 2014 was going to be! There were alot of applicants with the same academic, service and extracurriculars as him.

He received his appointment in April and this was a really happy house!

Keep the faith...good things come to those who wait! It sure would have been nice to get that appointment in December but April was really sweeeeet!

Good luck to those who are waiting!

I apologize in advance for this long post.

DS just noticed that DODMERB has him listed as "Qualified" as of today. Could that information not being in the packet when reviewed be cause for a deferral letter? I don't think so, but I thought that I'd ask anyway.

We're just trying to make sense of the actual reason for the deferral letter.

Would like to talk with someone that could help us make sense of it all. Doesn't seem like admissions officer likes to speak with parents. I'm OK with that to a certain degree, but there are questions that we'd like to ask directly.

Is it truly a holistic approach to the application process or is there a minimum ACT score as a minimum criteria? We saw somewhere that 24 was the Mean score on the ACT. DS got a 25. His reading score held him back.

The deferral letter is in my opinion too vague. It would be nice if it wasn't a form letter, but more of a specific letter based on the weak points of the application. Sure it could still be a form letter, but based on the weaker areas specific to that Cadet Canidate.

We felt (probably like most parents) that our DS application was very strong. but now he needs to take the ACT again (too late to register for the last possible testing date), send in more letters of recommendation (how many...it doesn't provide any guidance on this), and list more accomplishments and community service projects, etc. (would these additional projects be accomplished for the correct reason?)

I'm just now dealing with a DS that doesn't want a plan B, but will be spending his senior year trying to figure out what he may need to do, when what he wants to do is (like most other students). He was considering not playing baseball this spring to avoid injury that could cost him an appointment (he is a catcher)...but now it looks like he should play...or shouldn't he? It's a risk either way.

If I've offended anyone by asking these questions I'm truly sorry, but like I said earlier, we are just trying to figure this thing out.

Thank you to anyone who could lend additional insight into this. We are hanging in there like the dozens of other parents on this sight. It is encouraging to know that deferrals do get appointments and become successful USCG officers. We just hope our DS is one who is in the ranks with those fine officers.

When would the Scholars program candidates be offered that appointment?

EA decisions are made independently of DODMERB status.

Perhaps your son, instead of you, should speak with the Admissions Officer. They may be more inclined to speak with the candidate rather than the parent.

Yes it is a holistic evaluation - scholastic achievement, volunteer involvement, work history, leadership, sports, character, essay, LORs, PFE, etc.

Not sure of your source, but the median ACT reading score for the Class of 2014 was 27 (not sure of the mean score, only the median).

The deferral letter is in my opinion too vague. It would be nice if it wasn't a form letter, but more of a specific letter based on the weak points of the application. Sure it could still be a form letter, but based on the weaker areas specific to that Cadet Canidate.

I doubt that Admissions has the resources to do this. Addressing the reasons specific to each deferral could be an overwhelming task for such a small staff.

To have his file reviewed again under Regular Admissions, he needs to update it with new scores, new transcripts, or new LORs.

I've always advised those who play sports or are involved in some activity to continue to play the sport or activity that they enjoy because they enjoy it and not because it may look good (or not) on their application or they may get hurt and lose an appointment.

If I've offended anyone by asking these questions I'm truly sorry, but like I said earlier, we are just trying to figure this thing out.

Indeed, deferrals are not rejections, and until they give you a definite "no" the answer is still "maybe."

When would the Scholars program candidates be offered that appointment?

In the past, CGAS appointment have come from EA as well as RA candidates.

Hello, I just wanted to mention that even though it is too late to register for the ACT he could always enter the stand by option. My DS did this last year and it worked out fine...of course it is first come first serve so be early. It will cost extra though, but it is an option.

I am very sorry for your distress and frustration, however one thing I have been reading is a deferral is not "No"...keep the faith. I wish your son the best.

To everyone who post on this forum: THANK YOU! I do not post often, however I read everyday as does my son. I don't know what we would do without you guys!:shake:

Back to stalking the mail carrier...

This is crunch time for the AO's. I know for us, it was hard to connect with them because they are so busy. But everytime we did connect, they were very gracious and helpful.

I would continue to play sports, work on running hills, and PFE stuff just to stay in shape. My ds was deferred during EA too. We heard in April about his appointment. But all the while he was continuing to earn awards with his Civil Air Patrol group, ROTC scholarships, and improving his PFE, which he sent into the CGA to let them know he was still trying to improve his chances.

During this time, we also toured other schools just to have a plan B. I think it's smart to keep working Plan B with hopes you'll never need it. Remember that many cadets went to Plan B schools and re-applied to CGA who are doing great now.

I KNOW this is really, really hard-especially when all you want under your Christmas tree is a BFE! Hang tough group. Listen to Luigi, Objee, Boss, USNA1982 and others here, they'll get you through with great advice. -officer

.

For standby ACT - let me pass on a lesson learned. It is pretty easy to do, and it is expensive, but the problem is that they will delay the scoring of the exam. Check ACT everyday until your "bill" shows up. Then pay right away and expect the scores to be 2-3 weeks later than normal. We just got them from October 23 test date.

With that said, we are hoping it was worth it as if she is deferred we have a 1 point increase in Math composite and 2 points in Reading/Writing to submit.

And to keep with the thread... we are really getting to know our mail carrier well:)

1EagleDad, I'll be sending you a PM sometime today.

Officer, you are spot on. One word of advice for all candidates making an application to any of the 5 SAs, blunt as it seems, is that this application process is owned by your son or daughter. This is not a "WE" process, it is a "them," meaning we as adults have all graduated from high school, many from college and graduate school.
This is your son or daughter's time now. Admissions would rather the initiative come from the candidate who is applying and not the parent (no matter how much we want to help, after all isn't that what parents are suppose to do, help out our kids?)
It's time to let them do the uncomfortable task of finding time in their often too busy schedule to send off that email, go into Guidance and ask to use the phone to call their Admissions Officer. The application process is all part of preparing them mentally for the stresses and time management skills of being a Service Academy cadet.
Keep the faith, try to put everything in perspective and know that this process, painful as it might seem, is in place to ultimately select those candidates that USCGA feels fits the equation for a successful USCGA cadet and future CG Officer.

Wow! Thank you all very much. Trust me...we do let our DS work stuff out on his own as this is very important. We know this and it's difficult when he asks us questions that we don't know the answers to.

Luigi...you are most correct about the Median score terminology. My mistake. I believe that we saw the 24 in the last (2010 version) of the US News Top Colleges book. Perhaps that portion is a little out dated.

Great information from all of you! From a parents perspective we truly appreciate it. We hope that someday we will be able to give that same solid counsel to another crazy parent to just be patient.

As far as speaking with the AO...I spoke back in August when trying to find out the date when the applications would be available. DS had called a few times without response. Nice enough though and I understand all the reasons.

Thanks for the info about the "standby" ACT slot. I'm sure that DS will be there with a few extra #2 pencils and his calculator ready to go with new batteries!

Honestly...Thank you all as these responses were very welcomed.

Sincerely~

PM sent to you in 2 parts
Hope this clarifies some of your questions.

nothing today

I too am stalking the mailman, nothing here in Maryland for Group 4. This is like waiting to go into labor...you know it can't go on forever but drive yourself insane analyzing every little sign! DS had CFAD visit last Thursday and they said the admissions committee would be meeting this week and we should expect our decision in the next week or so. Fingers crossed!

I was wondering the same thing. Are some applicants aware of which group they are in? Just trying to figure out the "group system" and wondering why all letters are not mailed in one group.

One of the moms in the forum found out from admissions a couple of weeks ago that the EA1 apps had been split, apparently randomly, into 5 "groups" for processing/review. At the time she spoke to them, only 2 of the 5 groups had had their decisions mailed out. Another of the groups was supposed to be done and mailed late last week. I assume that is what MD SPIRIT is referring to. I don't know if you can find out what group your app is in; we don't know which one our son is in, though we assume not 1 or 2 since we have received nothing, and we know there have been at least two mailing dates so far.
