Appointment today!

I've Saran Wrapped the kid and propped him against a wall in the basement - he doesn't like it but I tell him that it's for his own good and he's just gonna have to get used to eating through a straw until June....

I'm a GOOD Dad!

Romad, love this comment, :lolatyou: LOL over here in NC. Definitely need some of this comic relief as waiting to find out whether or not DS will get a BFE is driving me crazzzzzzzzzzy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :yikes:

So my DS has a decent chance of getting an appointment. Should we pull him out of the state regional wrestling tournament this weekend? He's the team captain and one of the best wrestlers. Wonder what the team would think of his about his leadership qualities if he quit at this point because he might get hurt? Should we make him stay home during the annual family ski trip? That would break his heart.

It is possible of course, that he could get hurt. That is one of the reasons for a plan B. But expecting an athlete to sit it out for months waiting for report day seems overly conservative, and I doubt the Academy would want a person who quit doing these activities just to get in.

Here is an example from very recently. This appointee was in a wrestling tournament and injured, now they are scrambling for a waiver and a very real deadline. You know how your going to handle it, but if you feel like reading the thread, it does put the "bubble wrap" into perspective.

"People say I'm crazy but it keeps me from going insane"

I think that applies to the vast majority of hopefuls here.

Wow - that is tough. Hope he has a good plan B.

DS is going to wrestle on Saturday. We are hoping that he doesn't get hurt, but are prepared to move on if he does.

Eagle; pima, blackbird, and others have explained my bubble wrap comment quite accurately. Continuing you "TRAINED" sport in the spring is natural. You're son is a "Trained Professional". (For lack of a better term). But deciding to sow your oats and do all the things you wanted to do before going to the academy; or simply being irresponsible is plain stupid. Skateboarding for the first time? NOPE. Bungee Jumping for the first time? Yea, right. As part of my son's graduation present from high school, his girlfriend's dad wanted to pay for him to go skydiving. Without emotion, I told my son to express his appreciation but to decline, because the academy will teach you skydiving. See if you can do something different than what's at the academy. (That was my NICE way of not telling my son what I really thought). To my son's girlfriend's father...... I simply asked him: "Are you really that stupid??????"

My son received his appoint at the end of October. They were still in football season. He couldn't stop with the playoffs and state championship coming up. He played football. He "Chose" to not play soccer in the spring. But he still enjoyed his senior year. He just didn't go out and get stupid. The bubble wrap comment is an inside joke and telling appointees to not be stupid. And yes, there are plenty of stories of appointees losing their appointment because they got injured. And believe it or not, most are not in activities they are trained in; but rather first time activities or stupid horse play.

Personally I have also taken the route to be more cautious. I do track and field and in particular I do (did) hurdles. My sophomore year I sprained my ankle and had to end the season early. Being recently told of an appointment myself, I chose to do long distance instead so that I do not risk injuring my ankles doing hurdling.

I stress fractured my foot running an extremely hilly course for cross country last October. It happened RIGHT after my DoDMERB exam. I barely healed up in time to get a remedial. Now I'm running track and I'm hoping nothing like that happens again, and if I'm offered an appointment I don't have plans to stop running.

I do think I'll take up freerunning though... Joking! :thumb:

Congratulations! That's exciting, especially because it's earlier than expected.

Hey mom in fl, what all is your DS involved in and what does his application look like? I'm up in MT and we haven't heard anything yet, so can you give some perspective towards who is already getting appointments. I've been waiting it out but really want to see where I'd stand compared to other candidates.
Thanks! And Congrats again!

My son also received an appointment today, phone call from his congressman. We have been waiting for a very long time as well and couldn't be more excited. Good luck to all the other applicants seems like things are starting to roll.

Congratulations! May I ask when your DS completed his application? I'm in CA and I haven't heard word yet and I sent in my application late Sept/early Oct. Anxiously waiting...

Surprise for me today at the mailbox. BFE, but only contingent on a medical waiver. Kind of bittersweet, because if the waiver does not go through, my DS will be totally crushed after receiving the BFE. We are from Rhode Island and my DS is not a recruited athlete. I guess the appointments will be rolling in for quite a few people now. :bang: Good Luck to everyone!!:thumb:

Congratulations to your DS! Best wishes for obtaining the Waiver, as well.

My son is an athlete but went through the application process on his own, yes he received a principal nomination along with a competative nomination. 4.0 student, number one in his class, high ACT scores, State Champion and 2x All American in his sport, maxed out on most events in the CFA. Finished his application in October. He has worked his entire life for a good academic/athletic fit and the Air Force Academy became his #1 choice entering his senior year in high school.

Impressive! Not surprised he got an "early" appointment. Congrats to your DS!!!

Thank you so much for sharing the details! There are several hundred of use waiting on pins and needles for news.........

Hi, I'm new to the forums. My son has received 3 Congressional nominations from our state (Alabama). I do not know if they are principal or competitive. We are not a military family and this is our first experience with service academies. Is this a good thing or does everybody get multiple nominations? How do you know if you have a principal nomination vs. a competitive? Thanks for any info!!!

Hi!

Nice to see another Bama handle. Your MOC should be able to tell you if they use the competitive or primary method. I believe our Congressional Rep uses a competitive slate as well as Sen. Session. Just call their academy rep and ask. Also, it's fairly common for applicants to recieve multiple noms - especially if the region is less competitive.

What district are you in?

Best

We are in the 5th district- Mo Brooks. Wish I had known about these forums before now!! I have had so many questions that could have been answered!
