My son received an LOA and 2 nominations, then last Friday received a package with a nice diploma like letter inside stating "pleased to announce that the United States Military Academy has accepted you for admission....". My question is, does this mean he is if he accepts, and if so, what comes next?

The package should have come with an acceptance card. Mail it in...then watch the mail for all kinds of other important info that will come before too long. Congrats!!

I received an LoA a while ago and my nomination letter on Thursday. Therefore, I think I should be getting a nice package soon. However, some people say that the board is off until January. Does the board need to meet to give my situation the final appointment package? Should I give up checking the front door until 2010?

My nomination hasn't gone up on my online file yet which worries me. What is the best way to expedite this process?

    Thank you!

Be patient. You know you have been given a nomination (notified by the MOC) and you have an LOA, speeding up the process is not necessary and just makes more work for those in admissions that are processing things as quickly as they can. Your nomination will appear when it is processed. Also, MOCs don't have to send the noms in until January 31st. They may have notified you but they may not have submitted the slate to the SA. The MOC personally must sign a document (they submit online but it also needs a real signature), and Congress is in session - getting the signature may not be a top priority while Congress is in session. Staffers do much more than the nomination process. Sometimes there is a delay that cannot be avoided.

Be patient - both the MOC staffers as well as the SA admissions office are very busy and the holidays are upon us - they all want to do their jobs well and give you good news, but they also have a lot of other things to do (particularly when Congress is in session and addressing the major issues being debated at this moment in time) and many staffers will be taking time off to be with their families this time of year. The deadline for the MOC to submit the slate is not until January 31st. It is very possible that the MOC has notified the candidates but has not yet submitted the slate. Similarly, if the slate has been submitted, the admissions office also has a lot of things to do and may not have yet processed the slate.

Best suggestion: enjoy your holiday and don't think about it. If you get your appointment this month, be thankful. If not, know that with a Nom and an LOA, it will certainly be coming (assuming your LOA is only contingent upon the nom).

LOA + Nomination does equal appointment. It should come as soon as the academy can process your nomination, which can mean you get your Appt like a week after everything is complete, or sometimes the waiting is a little longer. And sometimes after you recieve notification from your nominating source about a nomination, the source doesnt submit its slate to the academy until a little later.

...if the LOA is contingent upon only a nomination.
I have a LOA and two nominations, yet I will not be appointed until I am medically qualified.
LOAs can also be contingent upon weight/BMI, application completion, passing the CFA.... and possibly more that I haven't heard of.

Yes. The Academy wants to make sure you know that an LOA or appointment does not mean you can stop trying.
