Are the appointed willing to share their stats?

Most experienced BGOs have learned the hard way not to make promises or predictions or even give positive vibes. I used to tell super-qualified kids that they likely would have no problems. I soon learned the fallacy of such statements.

BGOs see only very limited information and only on their own candidates. We have NO insight into the world outside the schools we cover. BGOs do not see teacher recs, which carry a lot of weight. They don't see CFA scores. They don't see grades and courses or class rank (unless the candidate provides this info). And our recommendation carries only so much weight.

Not to defend your BGO, but he/she undoubtedly thought your child was the most qualified he/she had seen in years and probably believed that your child had a great shot. I would imagine that he/she is very disappointed in the outcome. Not as disappointed as you and your child, but still disappointed.

USNA1985.. thank you for your comments. Beleive me I actually felt honored that my son's BGO would say that about him. He gave us nothing but hope for the future and he did say much of what you said about the process. He even said he argued the case with the regional coordinator in my son's behalf...so I know he went beyond what he needed to and even just telling us that helped us. He gave other valuable information on what to do for the future and how my son could possibly acheive his goals. He said, ."I think you should tell him, then pick him up, dust him off, and tell him that the federal government situation and declining spending authority is taking its toll and it is not his fault, just a temporary delay in getting what he wants" I would like to say that I think his guidance, your thoughtful insist (I have seen your comments) and other BGO's thoughout this forum are truely helpful and honorable! I appreciate all of your hard work in behalf of my son, other sons, daugthers and all parents out there reading this forum!!! Mark Mc

Whether you are applying to USNA or a competitive university, the three variables that I think can make or break you are - (1) essays, (2) recommendations, and (3) interviews. This might explain why some candidates who have similar test scores, rank, GPA and ECs get in and some don't. As well as why some with lower scores and GPA do get in.

Is anyone who has been accepted willing to share their stats?

(I understand that this will be proceeded by a lecture about geography/minority/and athletics-please don't)

Still...I would like to see if I am in the ballpark.

Thank you in advance,

SA2017.

Can anyone answer this for 2017?

I understand it really depends alot on the competitiveness of your congressional district and/or state. DS is appointed to USNA class of 2017. He was fortunate enough to receive an LOA. Some of his stats are as follows: ACT Math 35, ACT Eng 35, top 3% class ranking, Varsity Soccer/Cross Country, Eagle Scout, Boys State, 10 AP classes, 8 Honors classes, NASS, not a recruited athlete, National Honor Society, Captain Jr Varsity Soccer, Debate Team/State Champion. In clubs but no offices and no SGA. Above average CFA scores, and good recs. Class of 2016 profile will give you a idea of last years class

Hope this helps and DS is ready to go now

I could more in depth if you want.

The unsaid things that can really make or break you are

1. State/district you are from
2. male or female
3. minority
4. recruited vs non recruited athlete

More or less, if the quota for your demographic has been filled you will be passed over for someone who may be less qualified from a underrepresented/less competitive demographic

Any moderator on here will tell you there is no quota but from what I see in the quality of some midshipmen at usna, I conclude the only way they have been admitted it because they filled some underrepresented and thus less competitive demographic

So you said that male or female would make or break you... in which direction?

In related news, life isn't fair. Get used to it.

Keep in mind as well that people's stats from high school can be inflated because of the quality of their high school. My stats from HS were mediocre compared to many of my classmates...who I ended up outperforming. Valedictorian at Hickville Regional Single Room School House is not the same as valediction from Boston Latin.

Also don't delude yourself that you know everything about someone's application or high school performance based on their quality as mids. You'd be surprised at some of the random stuff people have done that you'd never know about unless you went out of your way to find out.

Being male or female has NO bearing on your admissions situation -- admissions have been gender neutral for the past 15 years. Obviously, USNA knows whether you are male or female but it makes no difference in whether you'll be admitted.

Given the number of applications from males and females, if USNA takes the top applicants, they'll get the numbers they expect (20-25% female).

One other thing . . . how "great" you were in h.s. is not necessarily indicative of how well you will do at USNA. Thus, do not assume that those who struggle or are slackers were not h.s. "all-stars." First, stats aren't everything. Second, some people don't live up to their "hype." Third, and most importantly, admissions is not an exact science and sometimes they just "get it wrong" in terms of how strong someone is/will be.
