Army 4-Year Schol. vs "3 year advance designee scholarship"

I recently was awarded a 3 year ad scholarship to the Citadel in SC. As an out of state student (New Yorker) what are the odds I could get this scholarship upgraded to a 4 year if people decline their 4 year scholarships? The out of state tuition is about 27k btw

My gut feeling is that your chances of upgrading to a 4 year scholarship through CC will be slim.

The vast majority of Out of State scholarships awarded after the first board were 3 year AD. This decision was based mainly on the budget that CC has to work with. In the past the ROTC batallions have been able to upgrade some 3 year to 4 year, this year in will be harder to do that. In talking with my older son's cadre they said that they will probably use what if any funds they have to offer cadets who did not receive any scholarship a 2 or 3 year campus scholarship instead of up grading 3 year scholarships. Of course this is just one batallion's perspective.

There have been some applicants that received 4 year in state scholarships that have been able to transfer to out of state schools, their scholarship was switched from a 4 year in state to a 3 year out of state.

I would definatly try for the upgrade, talk directly to the ROO and PMS at the school you were given the scholarship to. Ask them for their advise and opinion on the chances for an upgrade. You will want to do this quickly since the school year is almost over for some schools.

I would also make plans for what you will do if the request is denied, which it most likely will be. You don't have much time to apply for aid, in some cases the deadlines may have already passed. Check with the school to see what might be still available.

Was this the only offer you received, did you receive a 4 year to an in state school as well.

Good luck with everything.

This was the only offer I received as it was the only school I listed that I was accepted to. Regardless of whether I can get it upgraded I still plan to go. My family is covering room and board so 1 year of out of state tuition at the citadel (27k) only puts me 3k above the average debt of colleges grads in 2009. This seems very doable since I'm guaranteed employment upon graduation and will have a very low cost of living

Guaranteed employment is not part of the Army ROTC deal. Not all cadets finish on the accessions OML high enough to get an Active Duty assignment. Others go reseves or National Guard in which case they often need to find a civilian jobs.

There are other threads on the forum indicating that the Active Duty line may move up for ROTC over the next few years as the Army reduces their staffing; meaning even fewer AD slots will be available.

Mariner116,

On the whole you're right AD is not guaranteed by completing an A/N/AF ROTC program at most schools, HOWEVER, I believe Mike C is referring to the Citadel which is an SMC which if you complete the criteria, and are recommended by the university is guaranteed. This would apply to Norwich, Texas AM, Virginia Tech, Citadel, North Georgia, and VMI.
