Our son will commission soon and is asking my advice on uniforms. I was IN and he is MI so my advice may be wrong. If there are any junior MI officers out there, can you please advise on uniforms? My advice without your input would be:

Buy the best poly/wool ASU for your first one. If you learn you need more than one ASU or end up assigned in a very warm duty station, then buy a poly/tropical weight wool next. If you go somewhere that you need more than 2 ASU - then a polyester one might come in handy - and they're cheaper. I know I have them from $$$ to $, but he wants a career and I am fortunate enough to be able to pay for some of this for him. I owe him that - full scholarship.

I know it is cheating, but staybrite or equivalent brass. And at least one set of the permanently shined shoes - unless that is not allowed these days.

BDUs (or whatever they are these days): find out how many you need, but I'd own at least 6 sets and go heavy on the tropical weights, if they still have two weights. I lived in jungle weights even in winter and kept a few heavyweights for special occasions or severe cold. Then again, I was Infantry.

Thoughts? MI OBC is at Fort Huachuca, but no idea where his follow on is and won't know in time to order first ASU

Marlowe and White has been my son's go-to resource for his dress greens and blues. Not sure where he is getting his OCP uniforms.

I'll defer to others about tropical vs cold weather choices.

I believe they are shifting to the “pink and greens” as the day to day service uniform (like the old “greens”) and the ASU/“blues” are going back to their roll as a more formal uniform.

That is correct. However the Army refers to Pinks and Greens officially as "Army Greens" which unfortunately confuses them name-wise with the old dress uniforms of the 1960's. and 70's.

Yeah, I will always associate “greens” with the McNamara “greens”.

Per DA Pam 670-1... Mandatory possession date for pink and greens (AGSU) is Oct 1, 2027 so newly commissioned officers will likely still require the ASU.

I'm a recently commissioned officer myself. I get everything from Marlow White (except OCPs). The quality difference even between MW "premium" and standard is night and day. I bought the cheaper ones and after wearing them once, I swapped them for the premium. Price difference is less than $100. ASU is still the official uniform until 2028? That's the wear out date for ASU as the "service uniform." AGSU is the one being pushed right now though. My BOLC student handbook says we can have either one.

Just my 2 cents here.... Try to buy used. MW uniforms are great but very expensive. So much so I actually considered starting a uniform rental service for military officers. DS was FA and only wore his ASU 4 times in 4 years! on top of that he had to have the $100 bus drivers hat which he only wore once at his BOLC graduation and never again. When he got out he gave all his stuff to incoming 2nd LTs
