Army Aviation

Scout,

Whats going on with the OH58 replacement program? I know it was scrapped a few years back but I would assume that it would be re-impleimented sometime in the near future. I know the army has been purchasing some UH-72s but the missions of the two aircraft don't really overlap, do they?

The UH-72 is a stateside-only airframe. It is not deployable.

The OH-58D is being upgraded. An upgrade assembly line is being restarted. The single-engine freedom fighter lives on.

Do you know how hard it is to get a ranger officer job as opposed to a helicopter pilot job?

AVIATION

I was wondering right now I have astigmatism, If I get a LASIK eye surgery, will I be accepted. What certain requrements are there for Army Aviation? Please be very detailed.

Please be detailed with your question if you require someone to hand you a detailed response. What requirements are you asking about? Strictly vision?

Scoutpilot,

Would having a private helicopter pilot's license help to land an aviation slot?

An aviation spot on branch night is going to be based on your class rank, not prior helicopter experience.

No, it will not. Mom3boys is right. You need three things to branch aviation: pass Class 1 flight physical, pass the AFAST, and be high enough in the OML to get a slot.

It will help you in flight school, but not enough to make it worth the insane expense unless you're doing it purely out of a love for flying.

I wondered. Thanks for the help.

How long do you guys get to fly as Officers? Not sure if it's true or not, but I heard you guys only fly up to O-3, then you're moved to a desk/staff type of job.

Thanks for clearing up any misconceptions!

It depends. If you stay in operations, you will fly your minimums at least until you hang up the spurs (minus school time). If you leave Ops for a different functional area, it's anyone's guess.
