I understand the scholarship (tuition) doesn't start until your sophomore year.

Do the freshmen cadets with the 3 year AD receive any kind of monthly stipend or does that also start sophomore year? Also, if the school provides free room & board to ROTC cadets, would that start sophomore year too?

AROTC Stipend starts after contracting. No pay for summer months unless attending Army training(Makes me think of Bill Murray in Stripes). Take loans in name of your DS. Right now and I do not know if it will continue, you can add years to your assignment after branching. In return the Army provides funds for school loans.

No monies at all until sophmore year. You would have to check with the school to be certain on room and board but I expect that would start freshman year since its normally provided to cadets who are not on scholarship.

Normally the free room and board is offered to ROTC scholarship cadets, the main reason is that the Army is paying 100% tuition which standard students almost never pay at Privates. This frees up $$ for the college to offer free room and board, they still come out ahead. For that reason I believe most schools will not offer he free room and board until the scholarship kicks in. Of course you would need to check with the school to make sure.

You might very well be right Jcleppe. That's not how I've read the stuff at a lot of sites I've been at, but admittedly the phrase "ROTC cadet" could be open to interpretation. It would be interesting to see what OP find out.

First off...not all schools provide free room and board for scholarship winners. It varies from school to school, so this discussion board is probably not the best source to answer that question. At Clarkson, 3AD cadets used to receive free room and board, but not anymore. Contact admissions or financial aid or the Battalion. No stipend till your contracted (normally start of sophomore year).

Very true. It does vary or exist or not at exist from school to school. It may also revolve around GPA. To many variables for here. A quick call to your school may answer these questions. With regard to extra years to pay student debt, with budget concerns I would plan on paying student loans. If the opportunty still exists in four years, let it be a pleasant surprise. Just dont count on it.

Listen to clarkson regarding R & B. Schools are also hurting financially in the current economic world, alumni are giving less, stock market returns are not bumper crops.

R & B are part of ROTC supplemental or endowment. It changes yr to yr. Contact the school.

You have already been informed about freshman. NO they do not get a penny, be it stipend, or book allowance.
