Army ROTC March 2013 Board

At this point my son's portal has still not changed. Does this mean that he is not being offered a scholarship at this time or is there still a chance that not all portals have been updated yet?

Since the letters have started to arrive and nobody else has posted a recent status change then it is most likely that a scholarship was not offered by this board. Now is the time to start planning for plan B, if Cadet command has a lot of applicants that decline due to getting SA appointments or they select a different ROTC program, there may be a few offers made later. Best to have plan be underway, if an offer does come late then you can switch gears again.

Best of luck to your son.

Hello,

I just got my letter confirming a 4 year scholarship to Drexel and had a few questions.

1. How soon can I perform the APFT?

2. Even if do pass it, wouldn't the scholarship benefits not take effect until 45 days after enrolling?

3. Am I expected to pay my tuition and housing deposits? (Drexel gives free housing to cadets)

4. How do I go about claiming a travel allowance?

5. When I send the notification of intent to cadet command, do they want a copy of my acceptance letter from Drexel?

Thanks for all your help, I apologize if any of the answers to my questions are readily available elsewhere.

Letter arrived!

Just got the letter in the mail, with good news. DS received a 3 Year AD scholarship to UNG, VMI, and The Citadel.

He's been accepted to all 3 - think his first choice is UNG at this point, pending word from WP (still on NWL).

Congratulations.

1. Most likely you will take your first official APFT at the start of school. Some Battalions have an Orientation prior the the start of school and you will take the APFT then, There have been some who posted that the first APFT was withinn a week or tow of school startin, it really depends on your Battalion, they will send you information.

2. What take 45 days is the payment of tuition to the school, if you pass the AFFT and complete all the paperwork (More on that later) you will sign your contract and will start to get your Stipend from the day you contract. Tuition and book money will happen in about 45 says.

3. No, talk to the finance department at the school and let them know that you are on a AROTC Scholarship, the battalion will probably talk to them as well but just make sure. You may receive a late notice but don't worry, just let them know about the AROTC Scholarship. You will also want to talk to them about the housing so everyone is on the same page.

4. Good luck getting this, I don't think I have ever heard of a cadet getting the travel expense, though I can't be sure, we were able to make the 5 hour drive to school, not sure how it works if you have to fly. Talk to the HR person at the Battalion and ask how to proceed.

5. The paper work should tell you what they need, it doesn't hurt to send a copy.

Now, about the paperwork. To activate your scholarship you will have a pile of paperwork to complete, the hardest is the 104R form. The 104R is a complete 4 year plan of your classes to make sure you can graduate on time, this will need to be signed by your advisor. Don't wait til you get to school to fill this out. If the battalion does not send you one then either make an Excel sheet or find a blank one online. Start talking with your new advisor once you have one and start completing the form. There will be other paperwork such as Tax forms, Direct Deposit forms and a bunch of others. Some battalions will send you this paperwork over the summer, if they don't, ask if you can get it. They only send this paperwork to 4 year scholarship cadets, 3 year will have time to complete theirs before their sophomore year.

Once all the paperwork is done and you pass the APFT you will sign your contract, then you start getting your stipend. If your Battalion is a larger one, don't feel shy in keeping in touch with the battalion HR to make sure everything is being processed. There have been some horror stories on this board of battalions taking a few months to get their paperwork done, this will cost you your monthly stipend, the stipend is not paid retroactive, it starts the date you sign your contract.

Hope that helps a bit.

BTW - his portal listed VMI - not sure why exactly, since this was not his first choice, nor was it first in alpha order. Maybe they list the last school in alpha order, or maybe it truly is random after all

Jcleppe,

Thank you for the very fast reply, I appreciate it very much. You mentioned a huge stack of paperwork getting signed by my 'advisor' before getting to school, who is this advisor? Is that equivalent my college guidance counselor? Also, i'm assuming the school wil not ask for the first payment on tuition until after 45 day period correct?

The Advisor will be your College Advisor that will be assigned to by your College. The only paperwork you will need the Advisor to sign is the 104R form.

The college will probably send you a bill, and possibly even a late notice, just talk to them and let them know your on an AROTC Scholarship, The battalion should track this as well.

Jcleppe,

Ah I see, last question, should I accept admission from Drexel now? Or after the notification of intent has been sent and the Drexel batallion becomes aware of my standing (that way they can take care of the deposits)

You should be able to accept admission now, just let them know that you have received the scholarship. Send in your acceptance of the scholarship right away, fax and email it as well. Send an email to the Battalion at Drexel and let them know that you have sent in your acceptance of the scholarship, they should also be able to advise you on how to handle school admission.

Try not to lose any sleep over this. There's been tons of speculation as to how the school listed on the portal is chosen. Some say it's by alphabetical, but no one actually knows.

But a congratulations is in order to your DS!!

ROTC Scholarship

First off, Jcleppe thanks for the extremely informative insight to the acceptance process. I will have my daughter read your post. She received her official letter in the mail today and was offered a 4 year ROTC Nursing Scholarship to Pacific Lutheran University(the only school listed in her letter) in Tacoma, WA. This was her first choice but she was willing to go to any of the 7 she listed. She has already started to send out her thank you's to all the people involved in the process. She had notified the Track & Cross Country Coach last night that she was going to attend PLU after she found out she got the scholarship. The coach is getting ready to order her gear, as soon as we register. We will be emailing the battalion PMS and ROO to let them know she will be accepting the scholarship. A great 18th Birthday present, as she will be 18 this Friday. PLU is actually coming to town this Sunday in Denver, CO and I will meet with them as she is out of town with my wife for my older daughters bridal shower, who is already a Registered Nurse and works in a Neonatal ICU. We actually had a private meeting scheduled with them on April 15th also to discuss financial aid and her merit scholarships, but I guess this will be more of a fact finding meeting now to discuss her ROTC Scholarship. I am an extremely proud Dad right now, and she is getting congratulations from many people. It was hard to watch her break down in tears when she opened the notice, but it is a moment we will always remember as my wife was recording the whole thing. Good luck to everyone who received scholarships, and make sure to enjoy your time in school and remember to be appreciative of the opportunity you have been given.

Congratulations to your daughter.

PLU is in our neck of the woods, a terrific school with a very good ROTC Battalion. We have some friends who's kids attend PLU and they have nothing but good things to say.

I still remember my older son when he received his notice, I didn't think he could smile so big, well I was wrong. Over his four years in ROTC and his first year out of school there have been so many more times he waited for results from one thing or another, every time the smile grew larger. Your daughter is in for an exciting ride, full of opportunities, lost of waiting, some stressful teeth grinding and new victories, it's a lot of fun to watch though I admit we parents stress a little ourselves sometime right along with them.

You are so right when you say to appreciate the opportunity, I have to say that over the years I have seen a few waste the opportunity, It's sad to see. Your daughter sound ready to go, best of luck to her.

If you need any pointers on things to see when up here let us know.

Will probably take you up on that as we may be making multiple visits in the future to attend some of her Cross Country and Track meets while she is at school there. Thanks for the congrats.

Congratulations. PLU is a great school. It is also the cross-town rival of my alma mater, the University of Puget Sound. Go Lutes and Loggers!

Well looks like my Son did not receive the scholarship he was so in hopes of getting, as his portal did not change and there is no letter. :( It is a huge disappointment for him, but I guess now time to move on and find a plan B.

Congratulations to all those that did receive their scholarships! What an awesome opportunity for you!

Does anyone have suggestions besides full student loans for a plan B? My son is very interested in the military, but would like to obtain his education first, rather than enlist and go to school later.
