Army ROTC Scholarship Award Ceremony

Andzgirl.

You can hold onto that scholarship until I day. Many do. Typically what happens is if the student has both an appointment and a scholarship for the same service branch, I.e. AFA and AFROTC, the ALO does the presentation and acknowledges both. It is uncommon to have someone hold a ROTC scholarship to one branch and an appointment to another. I am sure it occurs, just saying in all of my time here I have never seen it discussed. On the other hand I would say that on this site the holding on until I day is always a topic of discussion, and my guess would be 50-50 on the amount that hold onto it. Main reason is many of these kids are athletes, Break a bone playing LAX, Track, Tennis,Baseball, softball in May, and they maybe on the cusp for I day, since the SAs will do a physical upon arrival. There was a poster here years ago. DS fell off the bus before taking the oath. He was a medical tutnback that afternoon. His folks paid the safety net deposit, and he attended college in ROTC for a yr. On a ROTC scholarship. Came back the next summer.

Ahha! Thank you for pointing that out to me! But to clarify, accepting an offer then is not the same as enrolling…they wouldn't be enrolled until I-Day, right?

Originally, my son's PMS was going to present the scholarship, however he was not able to make it. My son attends a private school about 10 hours away from us. The PMS called and arranged to have the PMS from the local university present my son with his scholarship.

That seems like it just happened yesterday, but on May 9th my DS will get his gold bars and head to BOLC, hopefully, soon after. Cherish the time parents! It goes by fast.

+1

Not only has it gone by fast, but time seems to be accelerating. Mrs. Delahanty and I were speaking just minutes your post appeared about invites for commissioning and commencement. Ready to shell out for dress blues?

As everyone mentioned previous it differs school to school. My school is fairly moderate. We have recruiters that come in from time to time, no restriction on uniforms. They usually hang out by the cafeteria with all of their little recruiting gimmicks. Actually, I think my schools' becoming slightly more conservative. Had the chance to visit some teachers over Christmas break ... noticed a lot of USMC recruiting posters plastered in the hallways ... even one in a classroom.

Regarding the award ceremony for the scholarship, for my school everything went through the head principal's secretary (she organized the entire award ceremony); nothing went through the GC, who to be honest ... (at least at my school) aren't really that great at being GC's.

I was hoping for there to be a nice big fat paycheck to be presented, but all I got was the certificate. Which was fine, considering that had I got a check - it would have been really awkward to try to put down where all of the students were sitting.

Additionally, depending on how far your Battalion is from your high school, they may not be able to award it themselves. Usually - and probably more so at Battalions at big schools, the awardance is usually delegated to the closest Battalion to your school. For me at least, my ROO would have presented it (despite the 2 hour drive) if it was closer towards the weekend since it's somewhere along the way to the armory where he does his Guard training.

So in the end a nearby Battalion cadre member awarded my scholarship. Frankly I didn't care too much that I didn't get a check; I was more invested in watching all the murmurs, whispers, and jaw drops  happen around me when the ROTC scholarship benefits were listed :shake:  :yllol:

Congratulations. My son also received an Army ROTC scholarship to the Citadel. We just found out Friday. As far as awards and recognitions, Every school does it differently. Our school ROTC has a separate Honors day ceremony for just JROTC cadets and they announce those getting scholarships. Don't know about about the symbolic check but that's a great idea. They also recognize at the High School honors ceremony by listing the scholarship in the program next to the student's name. Good luck to you and maybe we'll see you around campus.
