Army ROTC Scholarship Notification

Hello!
I don't post much but I have benefitted so much from reading posts from so many of you! Thank you so much! My son is an AROTC scholarship applicant and had his file complete for the board that met the first week of Oct. His status has not changed - We check the goarmy.com site - is that the only place to check?
Also - has anyone gotten a phone call from a PMS to congratulate them on being awarded a scholarship?
This waiting is so hard!

Unfortunately they (PMS) don't/doesn't always notify you so you'll have to wait. Calling them might help.

Go army.com

Well, I guess we won't be finding out any this morning either. I just tried the website, and it's down! I'm just hoping that they are updating SO many of our GREAT kids that it's just going to take a while! :shake:

I tried as well and realized it was down. Now that people realize that they are changing the status for some people I'm sure there are many checking it and it's overloaded.

There were a few kids on the goarmy discussion boards who also received the change. One had the PMS from a college call and congratulate him.

OK, Now that the first review board (September 30 - October 6?) has completed the online notification task (letters soon to hit the mail box, I'm sure), I thought I'd take this opportunity to try to analyze what has occurred during the past month or so. This is my understanding based upon what I have read.

1) Cadet Command started with their rank ordered (by total score) list of scholarship candidates and a quantity of scholarships authorized to be offered during this year.

2) Clearly they do not want to award all of the scholarships early in the process as clearly not every student has had his/her college list made during September. Excellent candidates apply after September 30th. So they take a certain percentage of the scholarships and starting with the highest ranked, take their preferred school list and contact the PMS' asking whether they will accept X candidate, providing their scholarship application information.

3) The PMS' at the various schools now do a quick check with their admissions offices to gage whether the candidate is likely to be accepted (or accepted already) and check their own files to see if they have notes on a candidate to see if s/he is likely to accept a scholarship if they are concerned that their unit will fill up too quickly (not typical on the first scholarship round, but they don't want to overcommit to their planned size).

4) PMS' report back any scholarship nominee that they will be declining.

5) Cadet Command notes any declination in candidates list, prepares the top 5 schools not declined for all of the candidates and posts.

6) We are here today. Scholarship recipients have 30 days to notify Cadet Command of their choice of school.

7) Once the complete list of accepted scholarships is finished for a round, the count of available scholarships for a unit (along with names) is then sent to the unit for consideration of additional candidates in subsequent rounds. Cadet command knows which (if any) units have filled their numbers during this round.

8) Subsequent Board can now be processed with the knowledge of any schools that have filled their planned allotment (no use in sending them new names to consider). Restart process at step #1.

Given that the next board date is scheduled for Dec 1 (or so), this seems to be a very tight schedule given 30 days to accept/decline scholarships. I would guess that for the next board the process won't get to #5 until right before Christmas. PMS' can't get the answer from most admissions offices at holiday times because most of them shut down that week. Hopefully Cadet Command can get the lists all processed before the New Year for round 2.

Now what is really confusing me is that round 3 is set for January. I can't see how they get that one off in time. Can anyone here figure that out?

goaliedad,

How did your daughter make out?

She decided that she would not be ready to make a decision (hockey issue - coaches like to see you play) in the timeframe for this board (although in hindsight, we probably could make a forced decision by Dec 1), so she intentionally did not turn in her PFT for the first board.

The next board should be in the correct time frame (mid-Dec to mid-Jan) for her decision making. Later boards could actually become problematic in the other direction (forced to pick a school before scholarship is awarded). In this case, we would be more likely to err on the side of a school that hasn't historically filled its quota.

I applied for both the Army ROTC scholarship and the NROTC scholarship. When do you have to accept of decline the Army ROTC scholarship? I was under the impression that you had an entire year to do so, but conversation on this forum leads me to believe otherwise.

Let me clarify, for AROTC, you will have 30 days to choose a school to apply the scholarship to (Similar rules apply to other branches, but I am not familiar with the specifics). If you fail to do so in that time, I believe you have lost it. However, once you accept an AROTC scholarship, you can decline it at any time until the first day of classes.

You may hold a SA appointment simultaneously with a ROTC scholarship (see all the threads about getting through summer before letting ROTC go).

However, I believe you are only allowed to hold onto one ROTC scholarship at a time. Upon accepting NROTC, you should decline any other branches scholarship you have been awarded. Likewise for the other branches.

Just heard back from my top school recruiter, I got the scholarship to two of my lower choice schools but not to my top choice. Anyone have experience with switching school choices?

Josh,

If you don't mind my asking, do you have any clue as to why your #1 school didn't make it? Is this an academic reach school, or a particularly popular (ROTC) destination? Or do you think that it is necessary to sell your #1 unit on your likelyhood of accepting a slot?

This does seem puzzling, considering that it is the first board that units could be already full...

designated a Scholarship Winner. The first board results are being
posted this week and we will send a file up to DODMERB on Thursday or
Friday."

@GoalieDad
Honestly, I don't know. My 2nd school was declined mostly because I'd go to MIT so I think that battalion probably fills fast. But I don't know about my first school.

We shall see.

I am confused....
Our experience doesn't line up with the above statement...
Here is our path so far:
My son completed the online ROTC Scholarship application in late spring '09.
His status changed at some point and he was told to schedule an interview - he did. (7/10/09). Shortly afterwards (2 weeks?) he received notice in the mail from DODMERB - to go ahead and get his exam - they gave exact instructions, etc. He did and he rec'd a letter that explains he needs to get further info from his orthodontist. We are in process of fulfilling that requirement.
His file was complete for the first board. We are just waiting to hopefully hear something at some point about a scholarship....
Anyone have any insight on the above statement and our story?
Thanks!

Timeline for Physical

OC Josh "Army ROTC will not submit your name to DODMERB until you are

RaceFam "Our experience doesn't line up with the above statement..."

The application timeline for RaceFam and OC Josh are likely different causing the difference with DODMERB and the experience. My daughter's timeline is more like OC Josh. No DODMERB until designated as a scholarship winner. RaceFam applied before the DODMERB change or is also an Academy applicant. OC Josh applied after the change and is not likely an Academy applicant. We have to wait for the physical to be scheduled after the file update to DODMERB later this week.

OC Josh, if you get accepted to your top choice school continue to pursue the scholarship there through the PMS! Don't 'settle' without trying. Good Luck. Thanks for putting Mullen's response here.

so if the status changes on the ROTC website does that mean that they will be sending a letter in the mail awarding the scholarship? if so how long will it take for the letter to arrive?

I have an answer based upon our experience.

It appears that some time this summer there was a change in process at Cadet Comman with regards to scheduling DoDMERB physicals. The previous practice was to give the green light with the interview. That changed to giving the green light when the scholarship is awarded. It seems that we also just missed the boat on that (we haven't been scheduled yet).

See my post from another thread for the official quote I received...

Was told by the Admission contact at Cadet Command, mailed out yesterday.

Hi All,

I'm new to the board. We're here in Texas and waiting to hear something as well. From what CC said, my son's file was complete for the first board, but so far no news and the web site seems to be constantly down.
