My son would like to get his Army ROTC scholarship application completed and submitted within the next few weeks however we have one concern with regards to school choices. He has a list of 5 or 6 schools he is interested in attending but does not have enough information to accurately rank them. We will visit some of these schools but was not planning on doing it until fall when the schools are up and running again. If he submits the application with his best guess on his order of preference can he change the order later?
Also when does the first scholarship board typically meet?

First board has met in late October the last couple years. My understanding is that the order can be changed, but I would tell you that you had better follow up on that request. Having a good relationship with a user friendly ROO will also facilitate ensuring that the school order is right. Make sure you visit with the ROTC battalions as you visit the campuses. He also has time to finalize the list of schools if he wants to wait until early fall.

Is there an advantage to completing the application now versus the end of September?

I know a lot of kids go on fb and collegeconfidential to get a feel for the colleges from kids pov. I believe most BNs/Dets also have fb pages. You may want your DS to look into sites like that during the summer.

Some kids change their minds about schools just by talking to other kids. One of our friend's DD was gung ho UVA all the way, until she started to visit forums, and she didn't feel she "meshed" with the kids. She still went for a school visit, but walked away thinking the posters and the kids were one in the same. (Too uppidity in her words). She went to W & M.

The boards start early fall, beware the board meeting and submitting application are 2 different things. It is like an accounting system, FIFO ---First In First Out. All of it is a queue. Remember, just because they say the close date for a board is X/X/XX, the board doesn't necessarily guarantee you will be reviewed for that board. There are only limited amount of applications they can get to when they meet, so if 700 are in the pile and they get through 548, the next 152 will be the 1st on the pile for the next board.

Our son got a 4 year AROTC to his number 5 choice, got accepted to all the other 4. He has been trying to get it changed since March with no responce. All we can say is pick a good in state school because chances are, that is where you are going to land if you are lucky enough to get one! Good luck, the earier the better!
