Army tuition assistance suspended

The lower pay level, poverty lines you speak of, junior enlisted, will still have access to the GI Bill for education benefits. Quite a few soldiers would use TA as a way to complete their degrees, saving their GI Bill for their kids college, not sure I ever really agreed with that option. The soldiers will now be required to use their GI Bill for their own education.

Officers from the Academy or those that received ROTC Scholarship will not be eligible for the GI Bill until they have gone past their original service obligation. The loss of TA will effect them more during their first 4 or 5 plus years. Need to remember that these officers did receive a free college education to start with.

There are many other things that we may see on the chopping block soon. My son received a slot at SF CDQC this summer. I would not be surprised if that is cut as well, I'm sure he will be disappointed but in the big picture, there is really no benefit to the Army that he attend this 7 week school. The savings to the Army could be spent training troops already on Active Duty. I think right now the Army needs to look at priorities. Scoutpilot is correct that TA, while nice is not a requirement when the budget is being slashed to the bone.

Congrats! Those combat diver course slots are VERY VERY rare for cadets and it is not an easy course. Best of luck, there are not many who get to wear that badge.

Gee, this is starting to feel like the Thunderbird flyover thread again. I agree we have to make cuts and TA is only a nice to have so a good place to cut at present. However, folks who have "lost" that benefit ought to be able to B-I-itch a bit about it... just like we do in the corporate world when the 401K benefit is frozen, the pay is cut, our share of the insurance premiums increase, etc. Most people realize, intellectually, that this needs to happen but it sometimes takes a little bit of time to adjust emotionally. How about we give it a rest?

What? You want some other posters to be able to express opinions without getting cut off at the knees? You must be unpatriotic, naive, selfish or a helicopter parent.

Aglahad - my DS also has a CDQC slot. I am hoping he retains it, but like Jcleppe, I will not be surprised if it disappears in light of the budget woes. It would be nice if we found out soon enough to make alternate plans, though. I wonder what the odds of that are?

Hi, DS is a cadet at North Georgia. He joined the National Guard and is actually at basic training right now. One of the reasons he joined was to help pay for college and one of the big things that we were looking forward to was the $4500 tuition assistance. I am going to write DS a letter and explain all of this to him because I am sure he does not know about this. I don't have a military background so I apoligize if my questions are dumb but this news caught us offguard and has causes me a little stress. DS really needs a little help so that we can pay tuition. $4500 may not seem like a lot to some people but to us it hits home hard. I read above that DS can use the G.I. Bill for education benefits. DS is currently completing Basic/AIT at Ft. Benning. So the fact that he will still have some sort of benefits to offset college costs is exciting news and would be a huge blessing for our family. Can you elaborate what benefits/money DS can get for college in ref to GI Bill? I will write him back and tell him, I appreciate you taking the time to answer my question.

A lot of National Guard TA is State funded and not effected by the recent suspension. He should talk with his new cadre when he finishes BCT.

Thanks for the quick reply. The Georgia Army Natl Guard website says TA is suspended indefinately. I will make sure he talks to his cadre like you recommend. Do you know about the G.I. Bill benefits and can you explain further?
