Army uses 1813 battle for modern lessons

Weapons change, speed of decisions change, but the fundamentals don't change as much as you think.

MOBILE, Ala. — Almost two centuries after hundreds of soldiers, settlers and Creek Indians died at Fort Mims, Army troops wandered the rural scene of the battle earlier this month as a training exercise in planning and tactics.

The soldiers were members of a Fort Rucker class studying to become warrant officers.

“It’s a chance for them to study something in a textbook and then come to the actual site and look over the area and see where this took place, how each side handled things and what could have been done different,” said Chief Warrant Officer Chris Janis, one of the instructors....
