AROTC 3rd Board...Place to Wait

Not 100% but most likely what we can handle financially. Spent the day there today at the Vet school ( DD wants to go there for undergrad and vet school)

Turtlerunner, is your DD getting a pre-med and going to vet school? My DS was contemplating medical school for a while but wanted to do ROTC so he stayed with his original choice, nursing. We did some research and found that it is unlikely that you can get the educational delay (after ROTC) to continue with medical school. He would most likely have to complete his service obligation after he graduates with the B.S. which would delay med school for several years. The alternative was to finish the B.S. and then try for the HPSP scholarship. That meant he would not do ROTC next year and he has his heart set on ROTC. So... here we go... we were happy he is sticking with the original plan, nursing. He can still try for an advanced degree in nursing and make a good salary. He will not be stuck with a pre-med degree and no certain career path except teaching... like his mom...

DD is only a freshman in HS. She has wanted to be a Vet since elementary school. She does a lot of pet sitting, not to mention the ever growing zoo in my house. She has zero interest in ROTC or military. She would be DQ'd in 5 seconds anyway, asthma and ADHD.

Not sure what she plans to do undergrad maybe animal science or biology then fingers crossed NC State Vet school. 900 avg applicants, 100 get in. She works her rump off.

DS won't be home until after 8pm most likely, Drill & Color Guard activity at school. I'm almost afraid to check here because if portals change he can't check until later. I'm almost afraid of him checking too :-/

Hey all.
I'm waiting on my third board result! Still have no idea when I'll find out but fingers crossed.

Good luck to all of you. Hope to meet you in the future, and if any of you are planning on going to michigan tech, PM me.

It's hard not knowing exactly when the results are going to come out. Because AROTC scholarship winners have 30 days to accept a scholarship, and college deadlines are May 1 - so that means we need to hear today! But I know that won't make it happen today. But hoping, hoping...

So, when the 3rd Board winners are notified... How will that be? Email, Postal Service, Telephone, ??? As far as those that are not selected... Are they notified as well?

Jcleppe gave me a good response to that question in a different thread. If you scroll through last week's threads you'll see one called "AROTC what if you don't win" or something to that extent.

Thank you StowieJ, but what if you are a winner? Does the status immediately change? Do we receive registered mail? How do we know if we are selected?

From what I understand, your portal will change from boarded to winner as soon as the letters are sent, then a few days later you will get the letter. I think you might also hear from the universities that are in your list, for example I asked one of mine to send me an email after the board results are out, with instructions on what to do if I win, and what I should do if I don't. Other than that I don't think you should expect an email right away.

Hope it helps, but if you check the 2nd round winners thread there's something there about it.

I know most of you have heard this before, and I urge my DD to remember it (probably too often)

Today, waiting on the 'Boards to light up' with decisions from the 3rd round is ONLY the first on many steps toward serving you country.

AND if you do not get the decision you want, in those next few days, there will be MANY MANY more opportunities to become an Officer in the United States Army.

I urged my DD to take a piece of paper, landscape, and draw a line down the middle from left to right the length of the paper. Label this 'Military Service Timeline'

Not all, if in fact most of you, will NOT serve a Career (20+ unless disabled out)

BUT for argument's sake - let's say that is the goal.

You should have 11.5 inches of timeline. Make a hashmark on the line at every inch - each hashmark represents 5 years.

Starting from today you will, with determination, focus, strength of character find yourself at the 1st hashmark 5 years from now as a newly minted 2nd LT.

The next 4 hashmarks you could take a green marker and however artistically you wish mark 'Army'

Dear Candidates ... please look at this time in your life as a brief chapter with oh so many more to come. And whatever the outcome ... stay focused on achieving your goal and enjoying the ride!

PS ... my poor artistic attempt is attached below as a PDF so you may visualize what I am trying to say.

John Reed,

Your portal status will change from "Boarded" to "Winner." After that you will receive a letter/packet in the mail (probably a little more than a week or so). As soon as they release the results your status will change. If I were y'all I would be expecting this Friday

My DS is on the NWL for WP. Will AROTC wait until WP makes a decision before awarding a scholarship or will they send out a scholarship offer pending the WP decision?

Thanks for your help.

DJA, WP and ROTC operate independently of each other. If you get a scholarship notification from ROTC, you can accept it and then opt out if you get an offer from WP and decide to go there. Good luck!

Thanks soccmomer,

Do most academic scholarships work the same way where you can opt out of them? My DS has a full ride academic scholarship to a 4 year University but it must be accepted by May 1st. I imagine he can accept the scholarship but then opt out later without a penalty if WP were to offer? Thanks again!

That's something you would need to discuss with the individual college regarding academic scholarships, I wouldn't assume that there are no restrictions or penalties.

Yes I was going to just to confirm.
