AROTC 3rd Board...Place to Wait

Thanks soccmomer,
Do most academic scholarships work the same way where you can opt out of them? My DS has a full ride academic scholarship to a 4 year University but it must be accepted by May 1st. I imagine he can accept the scholarship but then opt out later without a penalty if WP were to offer? Thanks again!

My DS accepted his 4 yr AROTC scholarship and an academic scholarship that would have paid R&B to his Plan B while he held an appointment to WP. Once R-Day got closer, he notified the university/ROTC unit about his decision to attend WP. Never heard another word from them re. the academic scholarship. Did get a call from the ROTC unit in late summer; the person calling didn't have the new info (or it wasn't noted on whatever list they had of incoming freshmen).

Accept everything before the deadlines.

I know he worked hard for it, and everyone out there respects that he held onto it, but it has to suck for the guy who was 1 point below the cutoff that could have gotten the scholarship had your son passed it on. (Just a thought.) I would do the exact same thing in his shoes.

West Point calculates into their appointments a percentage for attrition from either those that do not accept the appointment or those that drop once they start. Most appointees that have received both an appointment and a ROTC Scholarship end up choosing the USMA so the number that decline is very low and built into the attrition percentage.

The point is, that applicant that was 1 point below the cutoff would have never received the appointment even if the person would have declined their appointment. Those that were on the wait list may have a chance to go but not those that did not receive an appointment or wait listed.

As for those that missed getting a scholarship, the money not used for the applicant that in the end declined the scholarship will go back to the brigade and the applicant that did not receive the scholarship will still have a chance to get the scholarship once they start school.

For what it's worth: this morning I happened to bump into the PMS who interviewed my DS for the AROTC scholarship way back in August. He asked what was up with my son, so I shared the news of where he intends to go to school in the Fall and that we were just hanging out waiting to hear about the 3rd Board. He reminded me to tell my son to contact his school ROO to ask about on-campus scholarships (which he has already done). He also told me that as a PMS he can now go online and see who was awarded the scholarship from his school from the 3rd Board, but he isn't allowed to tell them until after letters are sent from CC. So fellow waiters, just as Clarkson pointed out for the 2nd Board, the process is moving forward as planned. Trust in the process. Regardless of his scholarship status, my son is committed to pursuing a commission through AROTC at a SMC....and I couldn't be prouder.

This is definitely good news!! at least we know the "end" is in sight...just checked DS's status and still says boarded...last time the status's seemed to change pretty quickly after the list went out to schools...maybe later today??? this is torture!

It should definitely be tomorrow at the latest. The end is near for all of you, good luck!

Hoping mine only still says boarded because the results haven't come out.

After some time you'll learn that a statement like "It should definitely be tomorrow" is rarely the case in the Army.

I hope for everyone that tomorrow is the day, but it's really just a guess. Good luck to you all.

If it's not tomorrow, then Monday would be the next bet?

Let me correct what I said:

Assuming the 3rd board results come out after the same period of time as the 2nd board results did, it would be logical to conclude that tomorrow SHOULD be the day, as it will be 25 days after the board, which is the same amount of time it took for the 2nd board results to come out.

I think what Jcleppe is saying, is that almost everything in the army (scheduling wise) doesn't follow the same kind of logic that you or I know.

I agree, I was trying to clarify so that the waiters did not think it was necessarily guaranteed that they will know tomorrow, I was just thinking out loud

I got you man. I'm just amused at how much people tell us that the army is completely chaotic. (Kind of the opposite of what you expect from the world's foremost military.)

The number of ROOs and other ROTC cadre that I've heard complain about the army communication system amazes me. (To be honest, I doubt it's as bad as they keep making it sound.)

Oh, no. It is that bad. Cadets still can't make summer plans because no one seems to know who is going to Ft. Knox this summer. My sons still haven't received their scholarships for this spring; fall came in a week before Christmas. There are some cadets that still haven't received the correct CULP pay from last summer, and one poor guy that hasn't gotten any scholarship money this whole year. Growing up an Army brat, I was under no delusions about the efficiency of the Army. It has proved, however, to be even more frustrating than I imagined.

+1 on the summer issues.
I will say DS HR person is a rock star when it comes to making sure tuition, stipends and book money are paid.

So I guess my real question is; why is it so bad?

Its that bad across all the services. When I cam back from my first deployment everyone asked me what I thought. My response was always three things... 1. I have no idea how we win wars. Communication and when what is going where is an unknown. Its baffling. But somehow it works. 2. National Guard units... that was a new one. Interesting. 3. Marines are awesome. Marines bored on deployment = the most inventive creatures on planet Earth. 4. War is a young person's game physically and an old person's game mentally.

Ok back on track. Good luck to all that are waiting. Hope to hear lots of great news in the next day or two!

Not to side track the thread, but what do you mean about the national guard units?

have to agree with above posts...some of the things DS #1 has had to deal with administratively are mind boggling!

But...it is still an amazing organization charged with a herculean job and my son has NO regrets, and is proud to serve his country every day. We are hopeful that DS #2 will have the same opportunities!
