AROTC Board News - Scholarship!!!

Thanks VISTA123. That gives a glimmer of hope! DD so wants this and went to school this morning feeling very defeated. I am telling her some of the same things you have said but, being new to the process, don't actually know what I'm talking about :).

I'm new to this forum and am curious if anyone can provide some feedback on the AROTC scholarship selection process. My DD completed her application back in October, just in time for the October/November Board meeting. Looking at this thread, I see that the initial recipients have been chosen. Unfortunately, as of right now, she has not received an email. I am guessing she would have heard by now if she was selected this round. I have two questions that maybe those that received the scholarships could answer. One is, did they have all their paperwork in last spring/summer? I'm wondering if they are reviewed on a first come/first serve basis. Also, does anyone know the statistics/chances of receiving the scholarship if you are passed over on the first board? Any input would be much appreciated.

The vast majority of scholarships are awarded from the second and third boards.

Having the application done early give you no advantage with the board, they are not done on a "First in First out" basis.

Best of luck.

Thanks, that helps.

Basic Stats

I would think they are finished sending out results for the 1st board (hoping not as DS did not receive the magic email) and it doesn't surprise me that some on this board with very impressive stats received the email. My DS took it in stride and said there is always next board but as a mom it's killing me.

It will be great to see the board light up again once the letters come in and we know the school choices. For those of us still waiting it would also be helpful to know basic stats on the final acceptances. (GPA, ACT/SAT, extras, in-state or out of state selection)

It's somewhat uncomfortable/unnatural for me to "brag" or give my stats, but I know how helpful it was for me to see the stats of others who received the scholarship, so here they are:

GPA: 4.6w 3.8uw
SAT: 620M 700CR 770W 1320M/CR
I will have taken 7 APs and one dual enrollment class by the time I graduate.
I've taken all honors in my core classes.

PFT
Pushups-81 (I've been told that my form was probably not to army standards. When I did them with my army recruiter, I got 60)
Sit-ups- 48
Mile-7:07

Leadership and Extra-curricular

Football (2 varsity letters and team captain)
Wrestling (2 varsity letters and team captain)
Beta Club
Over 100 hours of community service
President of my county Youth Commission (official board of the commissioners)
Church Youth Choir
Leader of my youth band (singing/playing guitar)

Interview
I interviewed at UT-Knoxville and the PMS told me that I maxed out the interview portion.
ADVICE: Wear a full jacket and tie. First impressions are huge and you cannot overdress for this.

Hope this helped! :)

I'll post mine as well for anyone wondering:

GPA: 3.83
Top 20% of class
ACT: 29 composite (33E, 22M, 28S, 33R)
Took a lot of honors classes and 2 APs

PFT:
Push-ups: 54
Sit-ups: 56
1 mile run: 6:34

Extracurriculars:
2 years Varsity tennis
2 years JV football
2 years National Honor Society (elected Secretary)
90+ hour internship at local fire department
Lots of community service (organized 2 NHS community events)
3 years Business Professionals of America

Interview:
Did it at Purdue and I think it went really well. Be confident in yourself and act how you would envision an Army officer to act.

mfleishler1 thanks for the stat post as it really confirms my original thought.. all of the 1st board winners are truly amazing applicants and I can see why you all received the email.

A few of you have been kind enough to send me stats either publicly or via PM and all of you look like superstars. You should be very proud of yourselves and I know all of us on this board wish you all best of luck.

My DS was pretty prepared in the fact that he knew it would be a long shot for the 1st board. I will share his stats so those that did not get the email can compare.

29 ACT, 3.4 UW GPA, 2 sports (Lax & Football but only a varsity letter in LAX), German Exchange Student, 8 years Orchestra (1st chair and elected Leader of group), Typical volunteer experience, Part time work.
No AP classes but all Honors.

We will continue the waiting game and hope for the best but it really is exciting to see all of you posting.

Congratulations and thanks for posting your stats.

The PFT stats below is something I hope all those that receive scholarships and even those that do not read and remember. Thanks for posting this with your comment, it will act as incentive to keep fit and ready for the first day of school and the first APFT. The ROTC graders will be even tougher then the recruiter was. Smart idea on your part doing the test with someone in the Army.

Best of luck to you.

3. Many won"t make it through Dodmerb

Regardless of your options and level of certainty, if you were awarded a scholarship, start the DoDMERB process ASAP!

There are a hundred little factors which can delay the process well into the summer or nix the scholarship entirely. DS #1 had elevated protein in his urine. Delay went into the fall. DS#2 was wacked in the eye with a soccer ball Thanksgiving Week 2012, was awarded NROTC Scholarship Feb 2013. Requested waiver in Mar. DQed in April. Appeal dragged on until June to no conclusion. He had to decide whether to keep appealing and lose other scholarships on the table, or take one of the those others.

Take a look at the DoDMERB section of the forum and you'll see what I mean.

In any event, you all should be congratulated for at least trying. Best of luck to all!

Similar stats, my math was higher and my writing much lower. At the time of the board's decision, I had a 30 on the ACT.

I have taken all the AP classes my school offers (not nearly as many as some people who post here).

Football Captain, Soccer, Band - Section Leader, Eagle Scout, Boys State.

I also wore a suit for my PMS interview. My PMS said my interview went "great" so maybe he meant it and that made a big difference too.

Push up form is huge. Our second son is in the process of finishing up his application. He'll make it in time for the second and subsequent boards. Anyway, he *thought* he was doing a lot of push ups. Turns out he was doing what is commonly referred to as bouncers (and what I imagine a lot of these guys that say they do 85+ push ups in a min do). When his brother (4 yr scholarship winner last year) came home, he "enlightened" him to true Army PFT form. Now son #2 is cranking out quality Army push ups that we know will pass on day 1.

DS is top 10% of his class, AROTC says his GPA is 3.7, ACT at the time 26 composite, SAT 1170 (640 M, 530 R). Can't remember PFT scores, although above the averages. 2 yr varsity soccer(with several honors for both years), capt 1, 1 year var track. Letters for those 3 years. Jr varsity baseball, basketball, soccer(capt of each for 1 yr). Eagle Scout, Boy's State, volunteer soccer coach. Band, Marching Band, Jazz Band. National Honor Society, just elected Secretary. Only does summer odd jobs Already DoDMERB qualified (although not sure ROTC knows that).
We think of DS as just an average kid academically, so have been pleasantly suprised. For the ROTC scholarship he listed Norwich University (already accepted with large merit scholarship), SUNY Brockport (accepted with merit scholarship), SUNY Cortland, and Niagara University (accepted with large merit scholarship). He wants to play his sport in college (which I bet you can't guess...) so once we see where the scholarship offers are he will have some additional decisions to make.
I don't envy the decisions he is ultimately going to have to make, and my job will be to help with the lists of pros and cons!

My stats weren't incredible either. 3.8 GPA and 3.4 unweighted. Top 25%. 30 act composite. JROTC commander, c/ltcol, varsity armed team captain, member of NHS. I got 50 pushups, 63 sit ups, and a 7:40 run. I was also in track for junior and senior year. Other than that, I was a boys state delegate, a member of mayors youth advisory council, and my interview went pretty well (I've talked to the guy before hand because my brother is on scholarship at his arotc unit.) I'm also a candidate for west point.

My school choices were:
1.University of Southern California
2.Arizona State University
3.Northeastern University
4.University of Maryland
5.Georgia Tech

I can't wait to hear what the school selection was!
Go Army!

Your school choices are quite geographically diverse! :shake:

I like to think that's a good thing. Why just pick your college choices out of a certain state?

My only real preference to location is that I do not end up in state (Arizona). I only put ASU for a backup plan (the other choices are pretty competitive schools) and I have already received a big merit scholarship there. I kinda wish now that I would have put it last on my list, so that I have a better chance at getting those out of state schools. If I only get a 3 year, I may not be able to afford the first year tuition though, so that's why I put ASU so high on the list.

As long as I'm at a good school with a good ROTC unit in a big city area, I'd be happy!

I hope you don't think I was criticizing you. I just got a little chuckle out of it. I poked fun at my son for choosing schools that spread more than halfway across our country. Congratulations to you.

The Barrett Honors College at ASU is well respected and offers a lot of perqs. If you already received a good scholarship offer, you might also qualify to study within the Honors College.
