AROTC January Board Acceptance

CC gave us the dates of 2/14, 3/1, and 4/5/2010. But, I guess they change it around as they see fit. My son has started looking into the SMP. He likes the idea of getting real army experience, money for tuition, and he gets paid more money per month. Still, I wouldn't mind see a four year or three year scholarship!

teach2- Would SMP be equivalent to a ROTC scholarship financially? I understand the benefits of SMP are outstanding, but it seems like it would be hard to pass up a 4, or even 3, year scholarship. Best of luck to your son.

can someone explain what is SMP? Is it an alternative to ROTC for getting tuition and stipend?

Can an ROTC cadet also be an SMP member?

Still Waiting

Hey Everyone! I applied for a 4-year scholarship and I had everything in by late October. I was told that I definitely made the January board and someone at NC State told me I would find out by the end of january so hopefully something will change on my status soon. Good luck to everyone that is waiting and applying!

I don't think I would want my son to give up a scholarship, if awarded. However, with the way things are (economy and all), it pays to look at all options. His number one school of choice would give him in-state tuition and he would receive the $4500 tuition assistance grant (which takes our contribution down to about $600, per year). The school also pays 50% of his room and board. He makes around $250 a month for drills plus he gets his ROTC stipend. Not a bad second choice. He is a good kid and he is always looking for ways to pay for his own education and not put it all on my husband and myself.

News?

Any updates from anyone on the AROTC hopeful front?

This waiting is killing me! And this week is going by so slow!

Nothing yet. I'm guessing it'll be the end of this week or next monday. And yes, waiting sucks!

yea still waiting here too....it sucks. I just want to know!! Hopefully we will hear by the end of the week.

Anybody heard anything from the Jan Army ROTC board yet???
status still showing "selected for an interview", which was done in Aug 09 and completed packet @ CC in Sep 09-WOW!!! this waiting game is for the birds.... but in the end I am hopeful.

Everyone appears to be in the same boat... not hearing anything and trying not to go crazy while waiting!

Most likely the parents check more than the kids. My son wants to be an army officer and he's determined to do it whether or not he has an academy appointment or an rotc scolarship. Also, he knows he's going to college - it's just a question of where. But it makes a huge difference to me because if he goes academy or ROTC the Bank of Dad reaps a major financial windfall!

i would think cnadidates. my parents don't even know anything about the application process hahah

Who is checking the sites more, parents or candidates????

I would say, Parents (99%). Because my son never knew he had an ROTC scholarship application in place until he had his DODMERB Physicals  He is now with VTCC Class of 2013 and loves it...dislikes it...loves it...dislikes it.......you can guess what's coming up next..........

Did you write his statement on why he wanted to be in ROTC?!

Parents check more often! My son didn't mention it at all or talk about it once all paperwork was finished. When he received each scholarship he either said "Cool" or "Told ya not to worry."

His calm demeanor kind of drives me crazy.

It's my future and my application, my parents have no part in it. In my case, I'm the only one who checks it.
