After failing to get a field training spot in afrotc I switched to AROTC. I'm about to sign the papers for the SMP program with the ARNG and finish my degree in 2 years. My gpa is 3.5 and I can nearly max the PT test. I want to branch aviation and fly. They told me I would easily get an active duty slot but said it depends on the needs of the army if I get aviation or not. Can any of you give me some advice or information on this? What are the realistic chances of getting aviation? I know warrant officers fly more, but I want to be an officer first. Also hoping that AROTC has fewer brown nosers than AFROTC.

My older son is a MS3 getting ready to go to LDAC this summer. He currently has a 3.5+ GPA and a 326 PT. The cadre has told him that if he does very well at LDAC he could be in the top 20% to 15% of the OML.

I gave you these stats as a comparison to what is needed to get your top choice. If you can get into the top 10% you will be gaurenteed your #1 choice.

Aviation slots go quickly they are the hardest branch to get. Unless you are in the top 10% it will be hard to get. That being said anything can happen.
A cadet in my son's class switched this year to the National Guard and was able to get an Aviation slot. He will not go active duty but he will be able to fly.

concur...one of our top cadets took the NG road to aviation. There is usually also the opportunity to trade extra obligation for branch of choice (not a guarentee). You should be shooting for top 10-20% of the OML. Another route to consider is medical service to medevac aviation as a fall back.

    Good luck.

Near max PT and a 3.5 gpa but did not get AFROTC FT slot? What was the cut at your school?

I have to say I thought the same thing as Packer. At our DS's 3.5 even as a non-tech would get you a slot. I do recall reading a poster saying their school only had a 30% rate, way below the national. I think for this yr the avg % rate was still hovering just below 50%, lower than last yr, but still around the marker.

AFROTC my best wishes for your success. The key is to move forward now in a positive manner. AFROTC loss is the AROTC's gain.

Listen to Clarkson. He is going to be your best resource on how to navigate coming in as a jr in college.

Can you explain a bit about medical service to medevac aviation pipeline? How does this process work?

Also, I'm guessing it varies by state, but do NG aviators have opportunities to go AGR?

The national percentages for this year that I was told by two different SMC's was 59% (~2000/3400).

All MEDEVAC pilots do not come from the aviation branch, but rather the medical services branch.
