I was wondering if ROTC requires students to report early--- before the university opens for move in and orientation. My DS will be a freshman and we are scheduling wisdom teeth removal before he heads to school. The battalion said they "will notify him 30 days in advance of reporting." Wondering if we should expect he will need to be at school before everyone else as this may impact the dental procedure, his internship end date and our possible need to add extra nights hotel stay to move him in. I know each school is probably different but is there a general rule? Thanks!

Battalion specific...I think MSI year my DS met with the cadre of the battalion once during his college's orientation week, but things at his battalion didn't get rolling until classes started at the host school.

Each school being different is the key word here.

My youngest had to be to school the Wednesday before the start of school the following Monday for an orientation meeting. they did the APFT the next day (Thursday) and had the contracting ceremony later that day for those that passed and had their paperwork done. Friday they picked up all their gear if they contracted. Nothing after that until Monday when they started classes.

I've heard of some battalions that have as much as a week long orientation, but only a couple.

The best bet is for your son to make contact with the battalion and see what their schedule is like, they should be able to tell you.

Once you son starts to receive info from the battalion, make sure he gets started on all the paperwork. He will need to be in contact with his academic advisor to fill out the 104R form, this is the form that will take the most time and is usually the one that can dely signing the contract.

I would think an email to the ROO (the one at the host school if it is a satellite or affiliate), could clear this up? My daughter asked and was told 1 or 2 days before the general school orientation/move in day, more details to come. Which would be enough information to make the dental appointment.

My DD starts one week prior to the rest of the students.

Last year, my DS was scheduled for a meeting with the ROO a few days before the semester began, and they did a checklist for supplies and expectations. Very informal but thorough.

Thanks for sharing this. Son did contact and they said they'd let him know 30 days in advance what day to report. That's it. I was hoping to get an idea especially if we need extra hotel nights and hard to schedule wisdom teeth removal without knowing when he has to be there.

Your son's battalion will likely arrange for early arrival with the dormitory department, but you should verify this. My son's buddy showed up a day before they expected him and he had to get a hotel room for a night.

At BAMA our students move in the weekend before school starts. Since it starts on a Wednesday we usually have new student orientation on the Monday and Tuesday. This is entirely voluntary and the intent is to give the students a head start. I hope this helps

ETA: We send out a schedule of events at least one month prior.

AROTC winners and their families meet with cadre for welcome luncheon during summer orientation and ROO scheduled a diagnostic pt test bf orientation starts. DD reports with all the other freshman for move-in day. I, personally, wish move-in day was a few days early bc move day is hectic. ROO sends out ROTC upperclassman to freshman dorm first night to touch base, answer any questions and switch contact numbers.

Empty nester feeling every emotion......happiness, sadness, pride, anticipation, fear.

Same here, VTech Corps of Cadets requires a week of "training" prior to the start of school. Parents return at week end to see the Corps parade. Awesome, can't wait to see him in that uniform.

For my son, he moved in two days before all the other freshmen to start ROTC activities. I would suggest getting the wisdom teeth done as soon as you can.
