AROTC Scholarship decisions

Thanks for the well wishes All.

We (DS and I) just had a 'disagreement' last wkend about wrestling before dodmerb next wk. He of course, said "what can happen in a wk" and ignored me completely. (surprise surprise...)

He came home with a nasty cauliflower ear. (never injured playing hockey or boxing-just wrestling practices) he is very good about wearing custom made ear protection even during practices as he has had this before. he agrees, its awful and disgusting so does good at wearing them. We go to this ol' doc (picture burges meredith) who only takes cash (!!!!!$$$$!!!!!!) , moves his offices frequently and has no nurse in his practice. But he does a great job. He does not stitch but drains and plasters.

EDelahanty suggested that it should still pass dodmberb, so I called Dodmerb yesterday and they said it is only a DQ if he fails the audio, has blockage or cant wear hearing protection. Today it looks alot better so we are hopefully optomitistc. HE IS DONE WRESTLING (according to him its until Dodmerb---I have a different opinion on the matter!)

cb7893, Is your boy's eyeball all better? Can he pass DODmerb this year or did he already become a programmer/sideload? Boy the navy will miss out if he cant get through... Regarding the uber latina....You are a soothsayer... I dont recall if you remember what you told me when we discussed my oldest sons dilemma (for those reading: another girl in my son's highschool was also applying to USNA a couple years ago who had the same ACT but better GPA, Captain of the Xcountry team, Student Body president, Captain of the math team and was a first generation MEXICAN AMERICAN, English as a second language GIRL. To make it worse she was cute, nice and a good friend of my son's. In our house we refered to her as the Uber-Latina. We were nervous!!! You said "dont worry about it, she will end up at Harvard or caltech." She got a full ride to harvard and never looked back. Bless her heart!

Definitely can join this group. My DS broke his leg just before regionals last January. In a cast and then boot until Mid May. Was not cleared to run until June and had to get ready for the Summer Seminar.

My wife and I just dread each and every match. Just one wrong move and it is over.

At this point he has been cleared by DODMERB and is medically qualified. Now if he can just stay that way.

I'm sorry to hear of your struggles and I wish you nothing but the best luck.

(He doesn't like it but I tell him every match that if he is in a bad position just give up and give them the points. The risk is NOT worth the rewards. But wrestlers just have this pride thing.... If ever in his life he listens to me may this be the time!)

OT: Wrestling.....

I know it's OT but have to jump into the wrestling fray....I didn't personally wrestle (played football & baseball) because I didn't have the fortitude to work out that hard and definitely would have been a failure at cutting weight. Many of my HS friends wrestled, as did my son (and 90% of his closest friends) in HS.

Yeah, wrestling exposes them to all kinds of skin infections and cauliflower ear BUT just may be the best sport on the planet for a young man to experience before going out into the world....especially to be a soldier!! The many lessons learned on the wrestling mat and in practice have served my son well. You learn what you (and your body) are truly capable of as you push yourself to the limit. Out on the mat, you have nobody to fall back on and you must step up and perform.

The physical skills learned in wrestling can't be taught in any other sport. Wrestlers are pound for pound the best athletes walking the Earth. I understand your DoDMERB concerns as I had two kids go thru the waiver process but keep them wrestling. Quitting mid-season is never a good idea....

"Give up?" Nice life lesson there. In this case, PRIDE is a good thing as is INTEGRITY to always try your best and HONOR to your team to not just "give up".

Thanks for asking. He had his one year check-up Thanksgiving week, but was not yet cleared for contact sports, skiing, or even sledding if you can believe that. Hopefully, end of the month check will free him up completely. ROTC is totally on the back burner. He is doing a killer multi-major and can think of nothing but academics at this point.

Am very happy to hear your DS is comfortably ensconced at USNA. Sounds like he should keep in touch with the uber-latina. She may be his commander in chief some day!

Take it easy Chief.... I am not perfect but in spite of my imperfections my son is doing just fine. By "give up" I meant give up the move, not the match. Not to continue to fight a move that would get him injured. That just makes no sense.

The mentality that wrestlers have is to fight a move even knowing it means injury. This is how be broke his leg. Wouldn't give up on the move. But I NEVER tell my son to give up and lose a match nor has quitting been an option. Two different things there. And if a parent being concerned about his son's health in your eyes is a bad thing then I guess I'll have to learn to live in the shame.

But I think the fact that in spite of a very serious injury last year that he is back in there now giving it all is a testament to who he is.

+1

My son wrestles and loves it. He is also extremely susceptible to the skin issues (pale northern European descent apparently are the lucky ones) and last year missed out on regionals due to "skin funk". That has just made him more determined this year and all I can do is hope that he does not get hurt. He is already Dodmerb qualified and he wrestles pretty smart so hopefully he stays healthy.

Accepted to Purdue! Still waiting on VMI..... if I don't hear by Tuesday I'll have to accept the scholarship somewhere else (can't risk not getting in).

Purdue is a fantastic school as you know. Congratulations.
What is your intended major? If it is a technical major Purdue is pretty hard to beat.

:shake:Strength did you call VMI? This is surely the time to "pester"! After an agonizing few days - at least on my part, not sure about DS - I think DS made a decision! I am not going to jinx it by saying which one, but it was interesting at how he arrived at the decision. It appeared from what I observed, that it involved a lot of being grumpy, sequestering himself in his room, playing games on his phone, most likely sending thousands of texts....and then, as HE says, it just sort of "snapped". Needless to say I am relieved and pleased! :shake::biggrin::shake:

Coltron, you, thus far have provided remarkably great tips. Whatever happens please keep on these boards and help out the next generation. I think your suggestions are wonderful! Thank you!

Thanks for your comments. Your too kind

Unfortunately the past two days we have been side tracked with brand new potentiality challenging Dodmerb issues. (Wrestling is a disgusting awful sport!!!!!)

I hope your son is doing better. I forget that others are still in the process of clearing Dodmerb as I've had mine done for several months now. Best of luck to him on both his Dodmerb and school choice. Happy holidays!

OK, time to send in the scholarship decsion....thoughts on the best way to send it? Choices are: mail, fax, or scan and e-mail. Also, any idea as to whether or not an acknowledgement will appear someplace on the portal? Thanks!

I'm sending it in the mail AND scanning it/emailing.

Faxed at 9:00, I see it was put on portal under uploaded docs at 10:00! Never did mail the original, but once our computer decides to work so we can actually read the uploaded doc....I will either put it back in the folder, or mail it!
