AROTC Scholarship Letter Is HERE!!!

Are any of you other scholarship winners having a hard time with this? Or were you all pretty certain where you wanted to go?

I haven't gotten into any of my schools yet. One is more of a sure thing. I'm a reach for one and I'm really big reach for one.

Regarding battalions: I've met with all three and from my Two Hour glimpse they are great. I'm not experience enough to be able to see the differences. They all had the ECs I'm looking for, seemed squared away, wee nice enough.

Regarding the schools:I'd be ok with any because they have my major, but I want the really big reach because its more prestigious for my major and I like the location (more urban with a defined campus).

I'm lucky either way.

My concern more is that looming December 22 deadline and I may hear back from the non binding early action admission that I was able to do at two, or I may get differed until regular admission, well passed 12/22.

Same here, CM11. Gonna try to wait as long as possible to see VMI's decision, and Purdue's comes out on Dec. 13th. I think I'll definitely get in to Purdue; VMI is likely but not a guarantee.

DODMERB letter came in today. Gotta do my hearing and vision tests before my medical tests! Glad I finally got the letter though and I'm on my way to being qualified!

VMI acceptance

Strength and Honor - sent you a PM...BTW DS got acceptance from VMI 2/1/13, did not apply ED.

Agreed -exhilaration and joy are fun to be around. This is one of my favorite threads. Someday, Chicago Cubs fans may know the feeling. And for those who haven't gotten good news, remember that the first AROTC board has in the past offered a disproportionately low number of scholarships.

By the way, those awarded scholarships by the early board will find themselves in a quandary. They must soon accept the award to a specific school without knowing if they've been admitted to that school (unless EA/ED). Not the worst problem to have, but potentially an issue nevertheless.

My DD was disappointed that she wasn't selected for a scholarship the first go-around. When I reminded her that she would only have had 30 days to respond with a decision on which school she would accept, she saw what a real dilemma this was, as she does not have decisions from 3 of the 7 schools she has applied to. So she was soon able to see this as a blessing in disguise, for now. She is keeping her fingers crossed for the 2nd AROTC Board and subsequent NROTC boards, as well. Do any of the ROOs know how many people were selected for the first AROTC board? If so, how does this compare to previous boards?

Has your DD had the opportunity to visit any of the schools she has a desire to attend? I took my son on road trips from San Diego to his top 2 school choices (Boise State and Gonzaga) and he was able to meet the cadre at each school. I think it also showed them how serious my son was about wanting to be part of their program. When he didn't get chosen for a "National" scholarship, even though his stats were better than his sister who rec'd one, Boise State called him and offered him a direct scholarship. My point for your DD is...there's more than one way to be awarded a scholarship.

K2rider - I sent you a PM.

Interesting observation: DS visited Norwich this weekend and everyone he encountered was suprised he had already been offered a scholarship. The ROO was suprised he had already completed his scholarship application. The 3 other potential students in the room had not even completed their apps yet.
Does anyone know if the number of applications actually completed in time for the 1st board is down from past years? Does the "general public" not know that there are 3 boards ?, as the information on the goarmy site says initial deadline is 10 January.
Not complaining at all that we were on top of things, and that I found this wonderful site to guide us, but I was a little suprised.

well, that's it right there. Reading the ROTC website never says anything about "earlier is better, in most cases". Applicants to the Service Academies have enough resources to know that early is good. ROTC? Hardly anybody talks about it outside this website.

In my experience they do not. In speaking to other parents the overwhelming majority thought that the posted deadline was when they started considering applications and making awards. Finding this site was a huge help in understanding the process and I've suggested it to a number of other applicants and parents. ETA: and several area guidance counsellors, too!

In DD's case, it was an ROTC officer at one of the schools we visited that presented the MOST comprehensive explanation of ROTC in general, the application process, and the various types of awards, complete with a detailed power point presentation, and it was he that told her that her best shot at a scholarship was from the first board. DD emailed him on several occasions after that initial visit (she did an overnight about 1 month later) and he was very gracious answering her questions. As we visited different colleges, it became even more clear that he was exceptional at his job. Even though she ultimately decided not to apply to that particular school, she stayed in touch with him and after receiving her scholarship offer, wrote to thank him for his invaluable assistance.

Way to go on the letter of thanks. Seems to be missing way too much in this day and age.

I think a lot of folks, even if they've heard of ROTC, don't even begin to think about the application until the start of senior year... and with all the activities at that time it gets pushed aside. I think it's also true of a lot of college applications too. I know too many folks who don't even think about visiting colleges until the autumn of their final year. That really needs to be started spring of junior year IMO, and so does the scholarship application.

We have a local friend who, upon hearing that my oldest was interesting in applying to a service academy, gave him/us two pieces of advice:
1.) take the ACT over and over until you get an acceptance letter, don't leave any ACT points on the table.
2.) read every single word on Service Academy Forums.

Both bits of advice helped son #1 and son #2; we will use this for #3 as well.
