AROTC scholarships posted

So the thread remains quiet in terms of any more notifications. Should we assume all of the offers have gone out? We have two sons who are in the NROTC program... one being commissioned this June and one is a sophmore. Both are at the Univ. of WA. Our third son applied for an AROTC scholarship but has not heard anything. We are prepared to move forward with option B but are hesitant to put a deposit down until we hear from the third board. His grades were not as strong as his brothers but he would be an amazing officer so we are anxious to have a final answer. Any information about the third board decisions would be appreciated

I happened to notice you have 2 sons attending the UW, we are from Seattle, nice to see a local person on the board, that is if your from WA. Congratulations to your older son on his graduation and commissioning this June. What did he decide on, Subs, Surface, or Aviation. We have 2 sons currently in AROTC, older will graduate this year as well, the younger is a freshman, both at the same school, U of I (Idaho).

Good luck to your younger son regarding the Army Scholarship.

Go Huskies

Thanks! Our oldest got into the nuclear propulsion program.... I think that's what it's called. Pretty exciting for him and he will report to D.C. we think some time in June. Our second is a marine option and will be commissioned in March of 2014. They love their Huskies! ROTC has been wonderful for them with amazing opportunities and great relationships forged. So hoping our third will get a chance as well. He was looking to go to SPU in Seattle or Biola in California but we still haven't heard anything. Appreciate your encouragement! Best of luck to your boys.

Uggh. You certainly picked the wrong year to be applying for an AROTC scholarship to a private university... best of luck (grace really) though.

Yep! I know there have been cuts this year and our son knows his choices are an uphill battle. He has a backup plan and we figure his path may be different from his brothers. Not going to worry about it.... just wait for the final outcome.

Looks like just one person posted they had their status change today and only one yesterday. Either CC is being very slow in updating the results or there are just a few left to trickle out. This board sure seems to be operating differently they any in the past.

Clarkson had posted earlier that it looked like all the applicants that were at the top of the OML but but didn't receive scholarships because their top choice school was full received 3 year AD scholarships. Could it be that these are the offers we have seen come out over the past couple days and the remaining offers are still to come? As usual I don't think anyone can tell exactly what is happening.

Hopefully there will be some news or closure soon so applicants can move to their plan B before it gets to late. Usually once the offers start being posted they continued for a few days then the official letters went out, this time is just plain strange.

I sympathize with all those still waiting to hear one way or another, Good luck to all of you.

Spoke with the ROO at my son's #1 school choice and they are waiting another 10-14 days before taking their next step. For those that don't get selected, always remember that there are other options for those willing to change course and/or make the effort.

According to the ROO I spoke with today, the school has "up to 5" campus based 4 year scholarships to hand out and also several "3 year advanced" scholarships. They also will have 3 year scholarships to hand out next year that cadets 'compete' for based on OML, PT, grades, etc...

Lastly, and by no means any worse, is going the National Guard route. In some ways, I think it's better. Your DS or DD would go to weekend drill one weekend a month and then attend the real-deal basic training next summer, both of which they get paid to attend. At least at the school in question, about 80% of the applicants are able to swear in as cadets via the SMP route at the beginning of their freshman year. Once they get commisioned upon graduation, they are still able to go regular Army route if they choose to do so.

Great info, hopefully more news will come out in the next week or so.

One thing to be aware of regarding National Guard and SMP. The available slots for contracted cadets are shrinking. Many if not most battalions have more cadets then contracts. SMP cadets can't contract until the beginning of their sophomore year at the earliest. Some SMP cadets are not finding an available contract until the end of their sophomore year, and some are not able to contract at all and are dismissed from the program. Some SMP cadets are taking the GRFD scholarship so they can continue with college and still commission, this of course means they are obligated to the NG and can't go Active Duty. Freshman SMP cadets will be competing for these contract slots with all non scholarship and 3 year AD scholarship cadets for the limited number of contracts, it is not a guarantee. Just be aware that there is a risk and that risk is getting greater that you may not contract, if that happens and you are dismissed from ROTC you will have to finish BCT and AIT and will become deployable as a reserve and will still be obligated to fulfill your NG/Reserve Contract.

The point is, if you decide to go SMP be ready to compete, come to school ready to pass the APFT, not just pass but score 270 or above right out the gate. Keep your GPA high the first year, choose classes wisely, don't over do it the first year. If your committed and your ready you'll give yourself the best shot. It's all about getting the contract, once you have that it's all up to you.

Good luck everyone.

Not such great info... I meant to say they get to go in the SMP route at the beginning of their sophomore year. A couple other tidbits, once they go to BCT, their weekend drill $ goes up and once/if they get sworn in as a cadet, they get the weekend drill $ on top of the cadet stipend so they are making even more than a "regular" ROTC cadet. Once they complete AIT, they are elgible for GI Bill and get paid for drill at the rate of an E-5!! :thumb:

Where can I find basic information on the SMP route? I am so afraid that we won't be able to transfer my sons award offer to first choice school. Just trying to figure out what else we might be able to do.

Thanks in advance!

more notification today!

FYI...When my DD's portal changed in February, it listed only one school. However, when the letter came in the mail, it listed 3 schools with various 3 and 4 year scholarship choices.

So before you start making phone calls and panicking about transfers, I would recommend waiting to get the letter in the mail to see exactly what you got. I think the letter was approximately 1 week after the portal update.

DS just called to say he received an e-mail from PMS at University of Minnesota congratulating him on receiving the Army ROTC scholarship offer!!!! Oh my goodness!!!! DS received the on line notification on Tuesday (4-10) that he had been offered AROTC to Ohio State University and we were over the moon with that news!! But now this??!! And it's Friday the 13th?:shake: Just for information purposes for anyone trying to figure this whole notification process out, on AROTC application - DS's list of schools:
1 - Ohio State University
4 - University of MInnesota

Schools 1,2,3, and 5 all in state tuition
School 4 - Univ. of MN the only one out of state

No word yet on either status page nor from the e-mail of scholarship term - 3 yr or 4 yr

Happily confused with the news!!:jump1:

It seems there is a big timing disconnect between the colleg admission process and the ROTC scholarship process, as scholarship are (still?) being dispursed, while the May 1 deadline approaches. What does anyone advise as the date to foregoe waiting and file the college selection paperwork?

When CC released the results for the Jan. board there were a bulk that were given over about 3 days. During the time that followed up to about 2 weeks before the final board released the results CC seemed to be giving out scholarship offers one at a time. Someone posted earlier the their ROO had told them that CC would be sorting things out over the next week or two, not really sure what that means.

CC may do what they did last board and release more results over the next couple weeks. May 1st is approaching but I think I would hold tight until the last possible date to file any college selection paperwork. Keep in contact with the ROO from at least the applicants No. 1 choice school to see if they see any status change, the ROO may be able to tell you when the award process is over and no more offers will be made, then you can finalize the paperwork with the college.

This board has been quite different from any of the other boards, It's hard to guess exactly what they sre doing.

We're still waiting to hear something on the waiver, but still hopeful, since it was regarding a surgery at age 4. His plan B is to sign the Housing/Dining contract with his first choice school and enroll in ROTC on campus in the Fall, unless the waiver is officially denied prior to August. He has applied for several other scholarships which will help him pay for this In-State school. He is completely healthy and ready to serve, but this waiver process is so frustrating. The "not knowing" seems to be a part of every single decision regarding AROTC.

Jcleppe; We reached out to #1 & 2 school choices (in fact, returned a call from one of the schools) but not helpful in information or advice. Surely they relaize the potential cadets are just trying to move forward?
I appreciate the advice, and I think we'll prpeare to send in forms at the 'next to the last day'!.

Boy, you got that right, and it doesn't stop with the application process. It seems like my son has spent countless days, weeks, and months waiting for one thing or another over the last 4 years of AROTC. I'm sure he will start a whole new world of "Hurry up and wait" as he transitions into the regular Army. As he put's it, you get used to it but it never stops being frustrating.

Good luck to your son, I hope he hears good news regarding the waiver,

official AROTC "BFE" just arrived!!!

Chapter 3 of this story

Mail just arrived and AROTC "BFE" was in the mailbox!!!! Of the five schools DS listed on application he has the choice to apply his scholarship to one of four of them!!! All 4 of them are 3year AD! The one not listed was his last choice school - it was his last choice for good reason...its host school is not exactly a "cross town" affiliate - it's an hour's drive away?!! It was an in state school that he was already accepted at and does have an on-campus NROTC unit (DS still awaiting word on NROTC-Navy option - that's kind of off-topic here...). Anyway, that's Chapter 3 of AROTC here in southern Ohio!!

2 years ago when my DD was going thru the process, I had paid admission fees to (3) schools and non-refundable housing deposits to (2) of them.

This year, as my son waits to hear from this 3rd board, we're in a better situation because barring an ROTC scholarship, his sights are zero'd in on (1) school. He registered for housing already and he received his 1st choice which are the best dorms I've ever seen and have my DD totally jealous.

After talking to the National Guard recruiter and the school's ROO, that my be the route of last resort yet still a very good one in many, many ways. At least for my son's school (which is out of state), he automatically qualifies for in-state tuition which is only $6000. Then after going to BCT next summer, he qualifies for $4500 in tuition assistance so that knocks it down to $1500 total. Assuming he gets selected for the SMP program his sophomore year, he'd get his monthly NG money on top of the ROTC stipend.
