I don't think Iran and the United States are on those kind of terms.

Just because the US acknowledges an Iranian terrorist organization as a terrorist organization doesn't mean that it's all good with Iran now. The fact that Iran had any kind of positive reaction to US policy is, in itself, surprising, considering that were still screaming "Death to America". Granted, they do the "Death to America" thing a lot. The positive reaction, though, not so much.

Overall, I'd say the protest has more to do with the timing than anything else. They've probably been doing that every year since the overthrow of the Shah. Real story is the rare semi-positive reaction, IMO.

Mostly your standard stuff, directives and various warnings. Enough to be dangerous.

If I remember correctly it is "peace be with you" and the answer is "and unto you peace". I know that their langauage is Farsi but I love the protest signs in English.

The religion of peace as their formal greeting suggests. I don't see a lot of people on the mall on the 9/11 anniversary calling for the death of anyone. The original posting showed demonstrators holding signs in english. It has been changed so the signs in english have been removed.

This took up much of our time today in my Islamic Middle East class. The celebrations are annual - and staged and scripted. As the majority of Iranians were 18 or younger as of 2007, the Iranian Government has been working to gain the youth's support. Adding youth support to as an ally is crucial to the Republic's success. Without youth support , no one will be able to continue the Republic when current officials become too old. So yes, linkgmr, they have been annual since the Iranian Revolution.
